James Thomas Preddy

Death visited another Bay City home yesterday and took from loved ones and friends Mr. James Thomas Preddy, after an illness which had extended over several months.

At the time of his death, which occurred Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, this splendid man and neighbor was 69 years and 23 days of age and had just passed by six days his 47th wedding anniversary.

Born in Russell County, Alabama, and reared there, he was married to Miss Alice Marchant at Phoenix, Alabama, on August 15, 1880, moving from there to Floral City, Florida. Eighteen years ago the family moved to Bay City and Mr. Preddy engaged in farming until a few years ago his health failed him.

Mr. Preddy was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and an excellent man and citizen. He was quiet and retiring in nature, firm in convictions and rank in his every dealing. He leaves a large circle of dear and close friends and a devoted family.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. John Armstrong of Phoenix, Alabama, his wife, three children and three grandchildren. These are Mrs. Mae Brunner of this city, Mrs. H. G. Moore of Houston, and Jas. R. Preddy, manager of the Grand and the Colonial Theaters, of this city; B. F. Mock Jr., Elaine Brunner and Jim Tom Preddy of Sinton, the latter being the son of Pete Preddy , who died in Corpus Christi several months ago from injuries received in an automobile wreck.

The funeral was conducted from the home of Mrs. Mae Brunner on Avenue F this afternoon at 4 o’clock with the Rev. Paul Engle, of the Episcopal Church, in charge of the religious ceremonies.

Pete Preddy Laid to Rest

The remains of P. A. Preddy, who died at Corpus Christi Wednesday night, from the results of an automobile accident near Sinton, Monday, arrived here yesterday afternoon accompanied by his mother and sisters, Mrs. Mae Brunner.

The funeral party was met at the station by the members of Jamie’s Orchestra who were Pete’s former pals and “buddies” and other old-time friends and associates.

The funeral took place in Cedarvale Cemetery this morning at 10:30 o’clock in the presence of one of the largest funeral crowds ever seen in Bay City. Rev. Paul E. Engle, Episcopal minister, officiated.

It is always a sad and difficult undertaking to chronicle a death. It is hard enough to write of an expected one, but as in this case, when one is cut down in the very flower of young manhood, leaving behind a loving wife and dear little baby it is doubly sad, for words are impossible as the right conveyance of our own feeling or that of other who knew this young man to love him.

We can add no light burden to the sorrow-stricken parents, wife, brother and sisters, for their grief can only be lightened by the hand of time and assuaged in the sympathies extended them by loving friends.

The pallbearers were Austin Castleton, Jimmie Castleton, Grover Coston, G. W. Lee, Weldon Smith and Carey Smith Jr.
