Laura Francis Pier

Pier, Miss Laura Francis, 63, died in a Houston Hospital Saturday. Miss Pier was a former Bay City resident prior to moving to Houston 17 years ago. She was a member of the Temple Methodist Church of Houston, the ESA Alpha Kappa Chapter of Houston, was a member of the Bay City Professional Womens’ Club, and a member of the Bay City UDC organization. Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. today at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. C. W. Winborn, pastor of the Bay City First Methodist Church, will officiate with burial in Cedarvale cemetery, under the direction of the Bay City Funeral Home. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. C. E. Lee of Bay City; two brothers, Norris G. Pier of Houston and A. B. Pier of Castle Rock, Wash., and other relatives. Pallbearers will be Paul Hampton, Clifford Lee, Judge D. B. Hinton, Russell Martin, Clyde Lee and Judge Jack Spurgeon.

Funeral Services Held Wednesday For N. G. Pier

Funeral services were held for N. G. Pier, Bay City citizen for many years, Wednesday afternoon at 5 o’clock from the family residence on East Sixth Street.

Mr. Pier died suddenly about noon Tuesday, according to reports. Mr. Pier was born in Buckhorne, Austin, County, and later lived in Brookshire before moving to Bay City.

Surviving Mr. Pier are his wife, Vasser; three daughters, Misses Emma Lou and Laura, and Mrs. C. E. Lee; two sons, Norris Jr. and Bowie. Norris lives in Houston and Bowie is a member of the United States Army located at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.

George N. Posey, 73, of 3007 Notingham, died at 7:45 AM, May 2, 1970. Retired manager of First City National Bank, Houston. Member of Bay City Country Club, Building Owners and Managers, Masonic Lodge No 7 AF & AM in Matagorda.

 

Survivors: wife, Mrs. Julia Austin Posey and daughter Celia Posey Knight, both of Houston; sister, Mrs. Harold Wise, Los Angeles; brothers, Tom W. Posey of Brownwood and Edwin Posey of Victoria; grandsons, William Lawrence Knight and Donald Richard Knight, Jr. of Houston; and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Services 10:00 AM Monday, May 4, 1970, at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston with The Very Most Rev. Robert T. Gibson, the Rev. Layton Young, and the Rev. Jack Lowery officiating. Graveside services will be held in Bay City at Cedarvale Cemetery, 2:30 PM Monday, under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Wilton McWilliams officiating. 

 

Active pallbearers: James Barry, Al Mingden, John Langford, Larry Cureton, Leon Bondurant, Clyde Hawkins, and C. W. Spradley. Honorary pallbearers: S. L. Rieves, Dr. John A. Bailey, Dr. James R. Smith, John I. Hill, Dick Williams, E. R. Mosby, James Coulter, Judge J. A. Elkins, Robert Singleton, and Jack Turner. In lieu of usual remembrances, contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Christ Church Cathedral or St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bay City. George H. Lewis and Sons, 2530 Sage Road.

Charles Leroy “C. L.” Smith, 68, of Ashwood died May 29, in Ashwood. He was a life long resident of Ashwood and was a rancher and also a retired electrician of Amoco Production Co. Survivors include: wife, Mrs. Ailene Smith of Ashwood, two daughters, Mrs. Charlene Meyerdirk of Jacksonville and Mrs. Nesloney of Luling; son, Major John Leroy Smith of Dayton, Ohio with the U. S. Air Force; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Reeves and Mrs. Eva Serrill of Bay City and MayBelle Smith of Sweeny; brother, John Fisher Smith of Long Mott; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 1, at 10 a. m. at the First Baptist Church with Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery with pallbearers being nephews: John Wesley Puryear, Grady Puryear, John Barbour Serrill, J. Fisher Smith III, Bill Massey, Timothy Faulkner, Jimmy Meyerdirk, and Mark Dickson. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Child Development Center. Arrangements with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.
