Wallace Klingaman Leaves 2 Year Legacy to Community
The current Outstanding Man of the Year, Wallace J. Klingaman, died at 8:25 this morning at Matagorda General Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He received his honor of Outstanding Man of the Year at the annual Bay City Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet held this past January. Klingaman has been cited for his intense contributions to the community since his arrival in Bay City 22 years ago. In his community participation, Klingaman served with the Bay City Volunteer Fire Department for the past 22 years and headed the department’s emergency unit and first aid division.
His contributions included his work with Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Explorer Scouts and he was Scoutmaster of Troop-623, sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church. He was even active in the short-lived Civil Air Patrol in Bay City. He was an instructor in the 4-H First-Aid and Safety Course, and the Farm Machinery and Tractor Safety Course, sponsored each year by the Matagorda County Extension Service.
He served as past president of the Gulf Coast Shrine Club and took an active role in the Matagorda County Bicentennial celebrations and was always active in the Matagorda County Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Youth Rodeo. Representing the Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, he served on the American Heart Association Committee Emergency Personnel.
In May of last year, he was presented a lifetime membership in the Black Cat Band and was honored by the Bay City Lion’s Club for his ever-present help at the annual Rice Festival, for the past 20 years, even though he was not a member of the Lion’s Club.

Services are pending for Wallace J. Klingaman of Bay City, who died this morning at Matagorda General Hospital. He is survived by: his wife, Virginia Klingaman of Bay City; one daughter, Janice Kelly of Corpus Christi; two sons, Butch Klingaman of Hempstead and Steve Klingaman of Bay City; four sisters, Helen Hammock and Delores Klingaman of Bay City, Lois Tidwell of Jones Creek, and Ruth Stinson of Phoenix, Arizona; three brothers, Gene Klingaman of Hitchcock, Don Klingaman of Pasadena, and Charles Plummer of Houston; and, four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Sam Hurta, Cecil Taylor, Vernon Leissner, Wayne Murphree, Craig Sharp, and Doug Holland. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Smithy, Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, Matagorda County Sheriff’s Department, and Bay City Police Department members.

Jerome George Kubena, 14 days, infant twin of Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Kubena died at the family residence in North Bay City Saturday morning at 12:30 o’clock.
Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock under the direction of Taylor Brothers.
The twin brother of Jerome died a few days ago.

Robbie Bethenia LaBeff Mrs. Robbie Bethenia LaBeff, 77, of Markham, passed away Tuesday night at Matagorda General Hospital. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel, with interment in Cedarvale Cemetery. The Reverend R. E. Black will be the minister officiating. Mrs. LaBeff was a member of the Markham First Baptist Church and a resident of Markham for the past 30 years. She is survived by: one daughter, Mrs. Ima D. Oliver; one son, Carlton LaBeff; three sisters, Mrs. Pansy M. Authement, Mrs. Ethel Bella, and Mrs. Myrtle Fitzgerald; one brother, Mr. Leslie D. Spripling. Pallbearers are: Carlton Lee LaBeff, H. M. Orr, Pete Schultz, R. E. Roecker, Doug Mayfield, Harry Couger. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for W. J. Laird, 81, were held in Bay City last week with burial in Cedarvale Cemetery. He died at his home after a long illness. Among his survivors are Mrs. E. G. Ryman, Mrs. Ollie Ryman, and Mrs. A. D. Ryman, daughters, of Wadsworth and Marion Anderson, son, of Bay City.

Funeral services for Robert Henry Lane, 50, were held at 3:00 PM Monday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, with Rev. James Eaves officiating. Burial was at Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Lane died Saturday at Matagorda General Hospital.
He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Allie Mae Lane of Bay City; two daughters, Mrs. Richard L. Phillips now in Japan, and Miss Barbara Ann Lane of Houston; one son, George Smith Lane of Bay City; one sister, Mrs. Phoebe Hickey of Pasadena; one brother, Fred Lane of Angleton; and one granddaughter, Carol Ann Phillips, now in Japan.
Pallbearers were Charles Eppright, Sam Conner, Charles Lafferty, Nat C. Hickey, Joe Lane Hickey, and George A. Hickey.

Mr. Earl LeBahn, 87, of Bay City, passed away Friday, May 23, 1997 at Matagorda House in Bay City.
He was born March 5, 1910. He retired from John Deere in 1960. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Pentecostal Church of Bay City.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Dovie LeBahn. He is survived by: stepdaughter and son-in-law Patsy and Robert Stephens of Pflugerville; stepsons and daughters-in-law Edward and Ruth Kelley of Bay City and Billy and Clara Kelley of Angleton; 13 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and other relatives and loved ones.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 25 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City with Rev. Terry Stephens of Pearland officiating. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.
Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.
