Samuel Victor LeTulle

Samuel Victor LeTulle, age 44 years, was born in Matagorda County August 26, 1894, to Mr. and Mrs. Louis LeTulle. He was reared in Bay City and Matagorda County, graduating from the local high school and then he entered Allen Academy from which he graduated. He entered Southwestern University in Georgetown and pledged Phi Delta Theta. A tall, well proportioned athlete, Sam was very successful in athletics; football and track being his specialties. He took a keen interest in other school activities and was business manager and editor of the college paper at Southwestern.

When the World War broke out, Sam LeTulle was the first to answer the call from Matagorda County. He enlisted immediately and from the rank of second lieutenant he rapidly gained his promotions until he became a captain. He entered the officers’ training camp at Leon Springs. On August 21, 1918, he was promoted to a captaincy in the infantry. This was exactly 20 years prior to the time Sam LeTulle accepted a captaincy in a greater army. He was provost marshall at Camp Grant Illinois and from Camp Grant he received his discharge from service, May 30, 1919.

He returned to Bay City and engaged in rice farming. He was married to Miss Clara Tennis, August 4, 1920, and to that union two children were born, a boy, Samuel Victor, Jr., and a daughter, Clara Louise. Mrs. LeTulle and children survive. He is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis LeTulle, and close relatives.

Samuel Victor LeTulle passed away at his home here quietly August 21, 1938, following an illness of extended duration. He was laid to rest in the Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City, August 22nd, under the auspices of the Masonic Order, an order of which he was a 32nd degree member and a Shriner. Pall bearers for the funeral were: Messrs. Esker McDonald, J. C. Lewis, George Sutherland, Vance Porter, Herschel Gilmore, A. S. Collins. At the grave the pall bearers were: Vance Porter, Everett Bond, Esker McDonald, Hubert Verser, H. I. White, Herbert Parker.

Although many months of illness had preceded his death, those close to him anticipated a recovery since his condition had seemed to improve in the past few weeks.

Sam LeTulle was a fond and devoted father. His two children, his wife and his home, were those things hear to him and around which his philosophy of life centered. He lived a complete and understanding life.
