James H. Hill

James H. Hill

In the passing of James H. Hill, a Texas pioneer received his reward of everlasting life. He was born October 21, 1851 at Saluria, Matagorda Island. His father was Carl William Andrew Hill and his mother Elizabeth Hill. He and his cousin, John Smith of Seguin were the sole survivors of the Hill home on Matagorda Island in the storm of 1875. Those in the Captain Hill home at that time were Mrs. Wm. Hill, James H. Hill, John Hill, Lizzie Hill, Mary Hill, John P. Smith, Captain Billings, Eddie Billings and Ike Brown. This storm was the same which destroyed Indianola. Mr. Hill visited his cousin in Seguin…the latter part of 1930, which was the first time they had met in 51 years.

In 1883 he was married to Annie Steinhart at St. Joseph’s Church, Galveston. Of this union, three children were born, Mrs. H. J. Shearrer of San Antonio, John and Anita Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Hill celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on December 3, 1933.

He moved to Bay City in 1903 at which time he was in the service of the Southern Pacific Railroad and ran the first train into Bay City. In 1921 he retired from active service. He and his family were ever important in the upbuilding of Bay City and this county.

Mr. Hill was a simple, kindly man, upstanding and modeled his life on the Christ-like spirit of tolerance and charity. All those who knew him were made better by his example and friendliness. As Father Coffey, pastor of the Holy Cross Church, said in his tribute to Mr. Hill, “I for one shall miss him greatly,” concluding his tribute with Edgar Guest’s poem: “He lived by the side of the road and was a friend to man.” To those who have been lifelong friends of Mr. Hill, the loss of his friendship will be shared alike by children and grownups.

Mr. Hill was buried with all the rituals of the Catholic Church. Requiem High Mass sung by the choir of Holy Cross Church with Father Jos. J. Coffey officiating. Father J. J. O’Reilly of Temple, Father C. P. Sullivan of Eagle Lake; Father A. J. Weber of Blessing, Father A. Raska of El Campo and Right Rev. Monsignor Schnetzer of Houston, (former pastor of Bay City). Many beautiful floral offerings attested to the devotion and esteem in which he was held. Relatives from Galveston, Seguin, Port Lavaca and Angleton were in attendance at the funeral.

Active pallbearers were Messrs. Edward Ryan, Jas. W. Gartrell, Matt Ottis, Stanley Cernosek, Frank and Tom Ottis of Wadsworth.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Hill and three children. To them the Tribune extends deepest sympathy.

Among those from out of town attending the services were Capt. Wm. Steinhart, Mr. Geo. Steinhart, Mrs. Paul Purdy, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Zinke, Capt. and Mrs. Wm. Holzhauser, Capt. and Mrs. Frank Reynolds all of Galveston; Mr. John Smith, Miss Josie Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith, all of Seguin; Mr. W. H. Smith, Miss Irma Smith, Mr. Chas. Elder, Mrs. Geo. Braden and Miss Alice Smith of Port Lavaca; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Scott of Wharton, Miss Ruth Hill of San Antonio; Mrs. Roland Blum of Austwell, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Waters, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Noble, Mr. R. Johnson of Wharton, Mrs. A. L. Steinhart of Houston, Mr. Wm. Schaffer of Houston, Mr. Ed Baker of Matagorda, Mr. M. Murphy of Blessing and Mr. O. A. Ulland of Markham.
