City Pioneer Dies at 83 – Ann Lee Cox Martin

 

Anna Lee Cox Martin, who has lived in and out of Bay City since 1907, died May 26, 1981, at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

 

She was born in Houston, December 15, 1897, of Lottie Rugeley and C. R. Cox. Martin was a descendant of two early settlers of Texas, Joseph Reese of Brazoria County and John Rugeley of Matagorda County. The widow of Louis E. Martin, she was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

 

Community organizations included the Cradle of Texas Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and treasurer of the Captain F. S. Rugeley Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

 

Survivors include: daughter, Permelia Ann Rhodes; granddaughters, Patricia Ann Kievit of Missouri City and Sheri Lynn Crabtree of Houston; and, four great-grandchildren. 

 

Funeral services will be held at Bay City Funeral Home, Thursday, May 28, at 2:00 PM. Rev. Milton E. McWilliams of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. W. B. Martin, 93, died at his home at 2805 Fourth St., Thursday afternoon at 5:10 o’clock.

 

Mr. Martin, a resident of Bay City for the past forty-one years, has been retired from active business for many years.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by: two daughters, Miss Marie Martin of Bay City and Mrs. Eula Hair of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Earl of San Antonio, Travis of Williamston, North Carolina, and Thelbert of Wichita Falls.

 

He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church for many years. Funeral services under the direction of Taylor Bros. are pending.

John Edward Mason

John Edward Mason 75, of Bay City, passed away, Wednesday 29, 2001. He was born August 8, 1926 in Old Gulf, Texas to Lenon Earl Mason and Josie Margaret Seerden Mason. He was resident of Bay City since 1952, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, and retired as a Station Operator from Texas Gulf Sulphur Co.

He is survived by: wife, Gloria Mae Schmerber Mason of Bay City; stepson, Arthur Mitchell Emshoff, Jr. of Bay City; sister Betty Marlene Bridges of Bay City.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at the Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Morgan officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Pallbearers will be Charles Hale, Ronnie Seerden, Melvin Ryman, Alfred Ryman, Jeff Bleau and Ray Rolf.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, September 3, 2001 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Gloria M. Mason, 85, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 in Bay City. She was born December 31, 1924 in Old Gulf, Texas to the late John Edward and Ruby Henderson Schmerber. She is survived by her son, Arthur Emshoff, Jr. of Bay City; sister Elaine Erickson of Denver, Colorado; brother Samuel “Sam” Schmerber of Albuquerque, New Mexico; numerous nieces , nephews and other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Emshoff, Sr., and John E. Mason. Visitation will be from 6-7p.m. Friday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Graveside funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Cedarvale Cemetery

Funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church in Bay City Friday afternoon for Clarence A. Mayberry, 54, who passed away Thursday in the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Houston.

 

Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery, with the Rev. Allen O. Webb officiating. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of said arrangements.

 

A resident of Bay City for 12 years, Mr. Mayberry was a member of the Baptist Church and was employed as a salesman by Anderson Brothers Motor Company.

 

He is survived by: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elliot Mayberry; his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Jo Nell Holland of Fort Worth and Miss Shirley Jean Mayberry of Bay City; two sisters, Mrs. John Blohm of Temple and Mrs. Bill Parrish of Copperas Cove; five brothers, Lon of Copperas Cove, R. H. of Mound, Fred of Gatesville, Johnny of Flat, and Ted of Bay City.

Funeral, Memorial Services Held for C. A. Mayberry

 

Memorial services for C. A. Mayberry were held today at Noon at a meeting of the Bay City Lions Club.

 

Led by Dr. Webb of the First Baptist Church, members of the Lions Club mourned the loss of their charter member who was scheduled to have received a ten-year charter membership chevron today.

 

This chevron was awarded posthumously today to his daughter, Shirley Mayberry.

 

Minutes of silence were given to the memory of Mr. Mayberry by the members of the Lions Club following the service and award.

 

Mr. Mayberry’s funeral will be held this afternoon at 3:00 o’clock with interment at Cedarvale Cemetery.

 

He died yesterday in Houston.

Clarence A. Mayberry Dies Early Today in Houston Hospital

 

Mr. Clarence A. Mayberry, 54, died this morning at 12:30 in the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Houston.

 

Mr. Mayberry, who had with his family, lived in Bay City for the past several years, was active in club, civic and church work. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner and past Master of the Lodge here. He was a charter member of the Bay City Lions Club, who only tomorrow had planned a special program in recognition of him and other charter members. He was a long time member of the Baptist Church.

 

Besides his wife, Neta, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jonell Holland of Ft. Worth and Miss Shirley Mayberry of Bay City. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Blohm of Temple and Mrs. Bill Parrish of Copperas Cove, Texas; five brothers, Tom of Copperas Cove, R. H. of Mound, Fred of Gatesville, Johnnie of Flat and Ted of Bay City.

 

Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist Church Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock with Dr. A. O. Webb officiating. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home and the Masonic Lodge in charge.

Kenneth Wayne Mead, Sr.

Kenneth Wayne Mead, Sr., 61, of Bay City died July 23, 2001 at the East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, Texas. He was born October 23, 1939 in Harlingen, Texas to the late James and Mary Inmon Mead.

Mr. Mead was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, a long time resident of Bay City, and a respected pillar of the community.

He owned and operated Mead Pest Control, served with the volunteer Fire Department for 17 years, and devoted much of his time to supporting organizations close to his heart, such as the Gideons and the Christian Businessmen's Association.

After an honorable discharge from the U. S. Army, he became a police officer in La Feria, Texas. During that time he joined the Masonic Lodge, where he remained a faithful and devoted brother the rest of his life.

This loving husband, father, and grandfather was a member of Bay City Masonic Lodge No. 865 AF & AM and the Bay City Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

He was a faithful friend and confidant to many, but those that mourn his loss the most are the family that survives him: his wife, Sharon Brunson Mead of Bay City; three daughters and son-in-law, Krissey Englett of Bay City, Heather Guerra of El Dorado, Kan. and Kimberly and Randy Neagle of Cleburne, Texas; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth W. Jr. and Rhonda Vess Mead of Humble, Texas and Scott Mead of Bay City; brother, Carl Mead of Corpus Christi, Texas; five grandchildren, Kendall, Travis, Kelley, Victoria, and Chrystal.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 26 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Chester Sassman, Donald Reed and Roger Bishop officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ken W. Mead, Jr., Randy Neagle, Wayne Layfield, Claude Hales, Wayne Deakle and Earnest Lechuga.

Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Anderson, Bill Frontz, M. L. Self, Roy Hummel and members of the Bay City Fire Dept.

The family will receive friends at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mehrens, Mr. Ben, age 87, of Rosenberg, passed away Friday, March 13, in Rosenberg. He had been ill for some time. He died in the Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Rosenberg. Mr. Mehrens is the father of Mr. Clarence Mehrens of Bay City.

 

He was buried in the Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Mr. Ben Mehrens is survived by: five daughters and two sons. Funeral services were held in Rosenberg, with a short service held at the graveside in Bay City.

Andrew Clayton Meyer, 36, of Bay City passed away December 28, 2013.

Clay was born June 22, 1977 in Bay City to Greg and Kristi Huebner Meyer. Clay had a kind heart and a sweet spirit and will be missed by all.

Clay is survived by his parents, Greg and Kristi Meyer; two brothers, Keith Meyer and wife Jennie, and Bryan Meyer; two nephews, Luke and Logan Meyer; and by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will receive visitors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at the funeral home.

The funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoss Gwin officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers will be Ray Culver Jr., Daniel Tucker, Simon Martinez, Jose Martinez, John Dewitt, Brian Kieler, Steve Zernicek, and Mark Zernicek.

Frances Marie Mitchell, 56, of Wadsworth, Texas passed away February 10, 2001, in Houston, Texas. She was born September 6, 1944, in Bay City, to Henry Bradford and Nell Tobeck Bradford. She was a member of the Nazarene Church, a resident of Wadsworth for the past twenty years, and was employed as a waitress at the Seabreeze Restaurant in Matagorda.

She is survived by: husband, Ray Mitchell of Wadsworth; daughter, Stephanie Rene Crowe of Huntsville, Alabama; sons, Toby Lively of Brazoria, Mark Pratt of Houston and Ted Pennington, Jr. of Pasadena; sisters, Mary Hairell of Sweeny and Evelyn Rose of Bay City; brothers, Henry Bradford and wife Mary Ann of Bay City, J. O. Thompson and wife Evelyn of Sweeny and Lathen Bradford and wife DeLoise of Houston; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Nell Bradford and by her brother, Jesse Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Pettigrew officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Former longtime Victoria resident James “Ed” Mitchell died September 3, 2006 at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston. He was born July 5, 1928 in Brooks, Alabama to James Ottis and Elna Sanford Mitchell. He was a member of the Catholic Church; served as supervisor for Dupont for 34 years; former member of the Knights of Columbus; and had been a resident of Bay City for the past 17 months.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Plaisance Mitchell of Bay City; daughter & son-in-law Karen & Forrest McDonald of Bay City; son & daughter-in-law James E., Jr. & Julia Mitchell of Houston; sisters Elizabeth Perdue, Emma Jane Walden, Hazel Mitchell, & Betty Rolling all of Alabama; brothers Roland and Lamon Mitchell both of Alabama & Don Mitchell of Omaha, NE and five grandchildren Kevin R. Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell, Pat Mitchell, Christopher McDonald, and Kasie McDonald. He was preceded in death by a son Robert J. Mitchell; sister Mary Ellen Foley and brothers Raymond, Gerald & O’Neil Mitchell.

Larry Mitchell
(June 16, 1941 - January 22, 2011)

Larry Mitchell, age 69, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Saturday evening January 22, 2011. Larry was born in Wadsworth, Texas to Earl and Lillian Mitchell on June 16, 1941. He is the oldest of six children. Larry married Kay Frances Allen on December 23, 1963. Larry spent three years in the United States Army and served a tour in both Vietnam and Korea. After an honorable discharge from the service, Larry began his career in the computer field. He worked for Dow Chemical until his retirement in 1993. During his years with Dow, Larry and Kay lived in Angleton, Texas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Midland, Michigan. Larry was a faithful and devout Catholic. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved spending time at the gun range with his son and grandson. He looked forward each spring to the annual Toledo Bend fishing trip with his retired Dow buddies. He loved to cook and was best known for his Cajun recipes. Larry loved taking his Labrador for long walks every night. Larry and Kay enjoyed being outdoors together. Larry especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, son and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kay Frances Allen Mitchell, their son Chris, four grandchildren Chelsea, Alexandra, Emily, and Zachary, two sisters and three brothers Linda Bucek and husband John, Daniel Mitchell and wife Cathy, Beverly Mitchell and her husband BJ, Jeffrey Mitchell and his wife Teresa and James Mitchell and his wife Paula and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Lillian Mitchell. Public visitation will start 9 AM Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors from 6 PM to 8 PM Thursday at the funeral home. The rosary will be held 7 PM Thursday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Mass will be held 10 AM Friday, January 28, 2011 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.
