Funeral services for Joseph Manford Barber, 64, were held Saturday with interment in the Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Barber died March 18 in Hondo, Calif. Mr. Barber is survived by one son, J. M. Barber Jr. of Bloomington, and three sisters, Mrs. George Serrill of Bay City, and Mrs. L. B. Starnes of Alpine, and Mrs. J. B. Sisler of Clovis, New Mexico.

C. R. Bell Minnie B. Bell
Charles Russell (C. R.) Bell, 59, passed away Tuesday morning, July 25, 1972, at his residence in Bay City, Texas. Bell was the senior member of Law & Bell legal firm and was a lifelong resident of Bay City.
Survivors include: wife, Minnie Bell of Bay City; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Julia Bell Cole of Houston, Texas; one son, Charles Russell Bell Jr. of Houston, Texas; one grandson, Vic Cole of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Law Sr. of Collegeport, Texas, Mrs. W. M. Winn of Uvalde, Texas, and Daisy Bell of Markham, Texas; and one aunt, Mrs. W. W. Davis of Anadarko, Texas.
Funeral service was held Thursday, July 27, 1972, at 3:00 PM at the First Methodist Church in Bay City, with the Rev. G. Wayland Elmore officiating. Interment followed in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City. Funeral services were under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Minnie Belle Bell, 74, of Bay City, will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Rod Tate officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM today, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bell was born September 11, 1912, in Texas, to Doug and Julia Wiggins Allen, and died April 18, 1987, at Bay Villa Nursing Home, Bay City. She was a member of the Sixth Street Church of Christ, past member of the Bay City Study Club and Bay City Book Review Club, Pink Ladies Auxiliary and Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Julia Bell and Bob Coleman of St. Louis, Missouri; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Russell and Alice Bell of Houston; brother, Marvin C. Allen of Weldon, Texas; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: husband, C. R. Bell, 1972.
Pallbearers include Russell Law, Fred Law, Morris Claude Allen, George Edward Tims, Lonnie Crosson, and Glen White.
Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Daisy L. Bell Graveside services for Daisy L. Bell, 80 of Bay City were held 5 p. m. Sunday at Cedarvale Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Miss Bell was born July 24, 1911 in Wadsworth to Charles Russell and Mary Campbell Bell and died July 4, 1992 at Matagorda House. She was a member of the Baptist church, lifelong resident of Matagorda County and retired tax assessor/collector for Tidehaven Independent School District. Survivors include a sister, Marylee Winn of Uvalde; two nieces, Connie Huitt of Palacios and Julia Bell Coleman of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and six nephews, Fred Law Jr. and Russell Law of Bay City, W. M. Winn of Kerrville, John Winn of Austin, James Winn of Fort Worth and Russell Bell of Bay City. Arrangements were with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Graveside funeral services for Ellen B. Bender, 89, of Dallas, Texas, will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 2, 1999, at Cedarvale Cemetery, with Rev. Sam Starks officiating.
Bender died at the residence of her daughter in Dallas, December 31, 1998. She was born September 12, 1909, in Rock Island, Texas, to the late John and Hattie Johnson White. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a resident of Dallas since 1993, and a former longtime resident of the Bay City area.
Bender is survived by her daughters, Gladys Penny of Bay City, Dorothy Giaimo of Chicago, Ruth Bunkley of Albuquerque, Minnie Turner of Knoxville, Martha Spitdowski of Dallas, Mrs. Douglas Spitdowski of Pell City, Alabama, Ann Clarke of Dallas, and Ellen Fowler of Ganado; son, Paul David Spitdowski of Hinesville, Georgia; brother, Lewis White of Seattle; 14 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Spitdowski, Sr. and husband Wilburn Bender, and by sons, Howard Spitdowski and Ray Spitdowski, Jr.

Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Mr. Bender was born Sept 23, 1921, in Austin County to Albert R. and Vera Garling Bender and died May 13, 1988, at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Wharton. A resident of the Ashwood Community for 60 years and a member of the Baptist Church, Bender was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Bender of Ashwood; eight daughters, Gladys Penney of Bay City, Dorothy Giaimo of Deerfield, Ill., Minnie Turner of Richmond, Va.; Martha Spitdowshi of Dallas; Ann Clark of Boston, Mass.; Dena Wages of Pell City, Ala.; Ellen Fowler of Ganado; and Ruth Bunkley of Los Alamos, N. M.; one son, Paul Spitdowski of Colonels Island, Ga.; six sisters, Dorothy Fojtik of Galveston, Annie Mae Coker of Lolita, Luella Ledwig of Bay City, Ruby Lee Sumner of Spring, Vera B. Gates of Amado, Ariz. and Betty Jean Harvey of Long Island, Ka.; five brothers, Lester Bender of Van Vleck, Frank Bender of Brenham, Harry Bender of Green Valley, Ariz.; Albert Bender Jr. of Santa Fe, Texas, and Earl Bender of Kingman, Ariz.; and 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Thursday at the First Pentecostal Church in Bay City with the Rev. Marvin Moore, Rev. Sam Starks and Rev. Joe Crosson officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Mr. Blackwell was born July 14, 1935 in Angleton to Albert Wade and Fawn Adams Blackwell and died Sept. 13, 1993 at his residence. His church family was the First Pentecostal Church. He was a resident of Bay City since 1962 and was a member of the American Brahman Breeders Association. Survivors include his wife, Willene Crosson Blackwell of Bay City; his mother, Fawn Adams Blackwell of Bay City; an honorary daughter-in-law and son, Janet and Wayne Neyland of Cleveland; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Sam Starks of Bay City; a brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Fay Blackwell of Chandler; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Kenny Wayne McKissick, Kevin McKissick, Troy Crosson, Don Crosson, Michael Fojtik, Greg Starks, Shannon Blackwell and Philip Starks. John T. Bond Maud Bond Funeral Services Held Here Friday For John T. Bond, 82 Funeral services for John T. Bond, 82, a life-long Matagorda County resident, were held Friday from Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. W. W. Conerly officiating. He died at his home here Thursday after an illness of several months. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Bond served as county clerk for six years, as well as working in the clerk’s office and tax assessor-collector’s office for a number of years. Mr. and Mrs. Bond had celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary May 29. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Mrs. John LeTulle and Mrs. Ed Hamel of Bay City, Mrs. Katie B. Farthing of Clemville, and Mrs. J. G. McMillan of Midland; two sons, E. E. of Bay City and Lloyd of Conroe. Also surviving are one brother, two half sisters, three half-brothers, 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Bowers 26, driller for Texas Gulf Production Company, who died of injuries suffered when a fourble board in a 122-derrick broke and fell on him. Rev. C. W. Hollie L. Briscoe Funeral Services Are Held Friday For Hollie Briscoe Funeral services for Hollie Lee Briscoe, 49, were held at the First Baptist Church Friday with Dr. Allen O. Webb officiating. Mr. Briscoe was manager of the Bay City Coca-Cola Bottling Plant and had lived in Bay City for the past 22 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church here. Burial was in the Cedarvale Cemetery with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Nora Briscoe, 96, of Bay City, will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 2, 1999, at First Baptist Church, the Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.
Nora Briscoe died January 30, 1999, at Matagorda House Nursing Home in Bay City. She was born December 10, 1902, in Caldwell County, Texas, to the late John A. and Rebecca Jones Hurst. She was a very active member of First Baptist Church, a former Gray Lady at Camp Hulen in Palacios, a long time volunteer for Bay Villa Nursing Home, and a resident of Bay City for 65 years.
Mrs. Briscoe is survived by: son, Hollie L. Briscoe of Francitas; daughter, Elaine Briscoe of Kensington, Maryland; seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hollie L. Briscoe, Sr., in 1955.
Pallbearers will be Robert Willis, Cecil Roberts, Fred Huitt, Blake Briscoe, Dan Briscoe, and Jerrad Fehmel. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Nan Shifflett Broughton Funeral services for Nan Shifflett Broughton, 79, of Bay City will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill E. Leediker officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mrs. Broughton was born May 30, 1906, in Marble Falls, Texas and died Dec. 29, 1985, at Matagorda House. She was a school teacher with the Bay City Independent School District for many years and a member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary and First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, William M. Broughton of Bay City; daughters, and sons-in-law, Linda Kay and Wayne Atkinson of Katy, Janey Beth and Wilbur D. Chambers of Bay City; three sisters, Ruth Ward of Edinburg, Frances Hicks of San Francisco and Dulcie Scott of Mintor, Ohio; a brother, William Shifflett of Orange, Calif.; five sisters-in-law, Bertha Broughton, Gladys Heligbrodt and Rena Broughton, all of Bay City, Mrs. Rex Shifflett of Marble Falls and Amelia Shifflett of Austin; a brother-in-law, Seldon Broughton of Corpus Christi; and five grandchildren. Pallbearers include Paul Ronhaar, Frank Sliva, Thomas Shifflett, James Hite, Fred Broughton and Rob Ramsey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Broughton in 1976. Mrs. Broughton Expires At 90 Services for Mrs. Tempie F. Broughton, 90, were held Tuesday afternoon from Bay City Funeral Home. She was the widow of the late W. H. Broughton and had been a resident of Bay City 63 years and a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. She expired Monday morning at the Caney Valley Hospital in Wharton after an extended illness. Rev. Billy Norton of Newgulf Baptist Church officiated at the services, and interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Six sons and one daughter survive, Mrs. Ludolph Heiligbrodt, Earl, Buddie, Maurice and Fred Broughton of Bay City, Ira of Wharton and Seldon of Corpus Christi; one sister, Mrs. Ira Bond of Mobile, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and eight grand-grandchildren.

Weldon Eugene Broughton Funeral services for Weldon Eugene (Bougie) Broughton, 41, of 4940 Park, were held at 10:00 AM Wednesday in Washington Boulevard Christian Church, Beaumont, Texas. The Rev. B. Robert Devin, Pastor officiating. A second service was conducted at 4:00 PM Wednesday in the First Baptist Church in Bay City, under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Baker officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Broughton died at 2:30 AM Tuesday, in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Nannette Broughton; one son, Weldon Eugene Broughton II; one daughter, Laura Nannette Broughton, all of Beaumont; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Broughton, of Bay City; and a host of friends and other relatives. Mr. Broughton was warehouse superintendent and purchasing agent for the Texas Gulf Sulphur Co., where he was employed the past 20 years. He held the rank of Major in the Air Force Reserve. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wharton, the Newgulf Baptist Church in Newgulf, and the Purchasing Agents Association. He was a native of the Gulf and had lived in Beaumont 20 years.

Broughton, Retired Rice Farmer Final rites for William Hamilton Broughton, 77, a Bay City resident for 51 years, were held from Taylor Brothers Funeral Home here Monday, with the Rev. W. W. Conerly officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery. A retired rice farmer, Mr. Broughton was a member of the Methodist Church and of the W. O. W. Lodge. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Ludolph Heiligbrodt of Bay City; six sons, Ira of Wharton, Buddy of Newgulf, Seldon of Corpus Christi, and Earl, Fred, and Maurice, all of Bay City. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Blanche Cherry of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Bell Newton of Dimmitt, and Mrs. Mattie Sanders of Hadley; two brothers, Grover and Milton, both of Big Spring.
