Lilly Torres Baker

Graveside services for Lilly Torres Baker, 79, of Bay City will be held 2 p. m. Wednesday with the Rev. Edward Boren officiating. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Mrs. Baker was born May 31, 1913 in Waco and she died Nov. 3, 1992 at Matagorda General Hospital.

She was a member of the Catholic church and longtime former resident of Houston who lived in Bay City for the past two years.

Survivors include a daughter, Benita Rogers of San Antonio; four sons, Anastacio Garay Jr. of California, Lee Garay of Houston, Pete Garay of Bay City and Paul Garay of Brenham; three sisters; a brother; 44 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Harry Brady Dies Here After Long Period of Illness

Mr. Harry B. Brady, grocerman of Bay City for many years, passed away here today at 4:50 a. m., following a severe illness of several years. Mr. Brady, a resident of the city for nearly forty years, was 50 years, five months and 27 days of age. He was a veteran of World War I and his death is attributable to injuries received while in service over seas.

For many years he had operated a business here in the city and was a great asset to the cultural and business life of the community. A member of the Baptist Church, he religiously devoted his time and effort to the faith of his belief. He was highly respected and universally liked by all of the citizenry of the city and county. When his illness became acute a few years back, Mr. Brady retired from business and spent several months in a government hospital.

He is survived by his wife and three sons: Harry B. Jr., James C., and Joe D. Also surviving are nine sisters: Mrs. Hugh Oliver of Houston, Mrs. L. D. Midgett and Mrs. Floyd Allen of Bay City, Mrs. E. G. Bielstein of New Braunfels, Mrs. Effie Newton of San Antonio, Mrs. E. DeCoux of Tomball, Mrs. Paul Susdorff of New Orleans, Miss Pearl Brady of Seattle and Miss Maud Brady of San Antonio. Four brothers, A. J. and W. J. of Fordtrain, J. E. of Baytown and L. H. of Houston, also survive.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Matchett-Newman. Services will be held from the Baptist Church, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock with Reverend James Draper officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Alberta Brady

Alberta Brady, 82, of Moody House in Galveston died Monday, March 9, 1981 at Roselawn Hospital in Houston. She was a member of the Baptist Church, American Legion, V. F. W. Aux. and Business and Professional Women. Survivors include: sons, Harry B. Brady Jr. of Houston, James C. Brady of Galveston and Joe Brady of Chicago, Ill.; sisters, Fairy Croft of DeStoto, Mary Quillen of Dallas, JoAnna Quillin of Dallas and Martha Butler of Tyler; brothers, Bill Quillin of Dallas and Thomas Quillin of DeSoto; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church Wednesday, March 11, at 2 p. m. with Rev. W. D. Baker officiating assisted by Rev. Billy Norton. Interment will follow at Cedarvale. Pallbearers include Cap Seerden, D. F. Wiginton, Gordon Hardegree, Sims McDonald, W. E. Ehlert and W. E. Frazier. Honorary pallbearers include Melvin Epstein, D. B. Hinton, Robert Anderson, Tom Anderson, Walter Mayer, W. O. Watson, Tom LeTulle, Albert Munn and Edge Graham. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

James S. Brady & Martha Isabelle Beavers Brady

Death of James S. Brady

Another one of our county’s venerable citizens died this week, in the person of Mr. James S. Brady, the F. Street grocery merchant, who departed this life Sunday morning about 3 o’clock, after a week’s illness from a stroke of apoplexy.

James S. Brady was born near Atlanta, Georgia, October 27^th, 1853, and with his father’s family moved to North Alabama when quite young. On Oct. 11^th, 1874, he was married to Miss Mattie Beavers, and in November they came to Texas, locating in Johnson county. They lived from five to eight years in each of Coleman, Milam and DeWitt counties and came to Bay City ten years ago, where he has been engaged in the grocery business, accumulating a fair competence.

Mr. Brady professed religion in his early manhood in Alabama, and joined the Baptist church, of which he has lived a consistent member near half a century. He is survived by his wife, and fourteen children, and one of the blessings of their fruitful life has been that all are living and enjoy good health, the head of the family and the oldest being first to be called to the eternal home. The children are L. H. Brady with five children and Mrs. H. Olive, and Harry Brady of Houston, W. Brady with two children and A. J. Brady with one, of Fortren, Victoria county, Mrs. L. D. Midgett, wife of the Superintendent of schools at Blessing, with five children, Mrs. W. R. Herkimer with two children of Kauffman county, Mrs. Bielstein and Miss Effie of New Braunfels, Mrs. Ed Decoux and two children, and Miss Maud and Jesse and Pearl of Bay City—a total of 31.

All of his children were at his bedside before his death.

The funeral Sunday afternoon at the Baptist church was attended by a number of friends, which would have been largely increased but for the very inclement weather and short notice, for the deceased was held in the highest esteem by the people of Bay City, as an upright and conscientious merchant and good citizen.

Mrs. Martha Isabell Beavers Brady

Mrs. Martha Isabella Beavers Brady was born near Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents moved to Alabama while she was just a little girl. She was married to James S. Brady, October 11, 1874. Soon after the wedding, the new couple moved to Texas. They lived in the western part of this state near Brady Bend for several years. They moved to Bay City in 1904, where Mr. James S. Brady was engaged in business of various kinds, dairy business, wood yards and then into the grocery business, in 1909. He died on August 23^rd, 1914. Mrs. Brady carried on the business until recent years, her health began to fail, she sold her grocery store. She has been confined to the bed for some ten days with the illness that brought her death. For the past few days in her hours of knowing her friends and children, her request often has been, “I am tired, I want to go and be with my Savior.” Mrs. Brady has lived a rather active life. She has been a consistent christian for years. She has been loyal to her church and work. For years she has held membership in the local Baptist church. She was a great person to make friends. She usually had some word of commendation for one and all. She will be greatly missed by many around the city because of her kindly ways.

Mrs. Brady quietly passed away from this life this morning at 1 A. M. April 14^th. Services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church, by her pastor, Rev. Odis Rainer. Mrs. Brady is survived by the following children: Mr. Lloyd Brady, Houston, Mr. W. J. Brady, Victoria, Mrs. A. J. Brady, Victoria, Mr. Harry Brady, Bay City and Mr. Jesse E. Brady, Baytown, Mrs. H. M. Olive, Houston. Mrs. L. D. Midgett, Bay City, Mrs. E. DeCoux, Lake Charles, La., Mrs. E. G. Bielstein, New Braunfels, Mrs. P. F. Sussdorf, New Orleans, La., Mrs. Floyd Allen, Bay City, Mrs. Effie Hill, Houston, Miss Maud Brady, San Antonio, Miss Pearl Brady, Bay City. One sister, Mrs. Adam Barnes of Bentonville, Ark.

Effie May “Fay” Carr, 88, a resident of Bay City since the late 1800’s passed away February 6 at the Bay Villa Nursing Home. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday February 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Thompson officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery. Arrangements with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Kirk, Mike and Sidney Carr and Drew, Tommy and Bobby Burnell.

Mariana Page Choate

Mariana Page Choate, of Conroe, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2004. She was born January 14, 1947 in Newgulf, Wharton, Co., Texas to Hattie Lee Patterson Page and Dorsie Denton Page Sr.

Mrs. Choate attended grade school in Newgulf and Wharton and graduated from Wharton High School in 1965. Her collegiate education was at Texas A&I and the University of Houston.

She worked for the Houston Grand Opera and retired in 2000 from the Texas Department of Human Services after 30 years of service.

Mrs. Choate was preceded in death by her father, Dorsie D. Page Sr., her mother, Hattie Patterson Page and one grand-niece Kerrigan Page Davis.

Survivors include: two sisters, Kathleen Page Janik of Gonzales and Betty Page Wilson of Van, Texas, one brother, Dorsie Denton Page Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; four nieces, Page Elizabeth Janik of Houston, Sarah Ellen Janik Russell of Salt Lake City, UT, Mariana Page Smith of Fredericksberg, Va., and Amanda Elizabeth Davis of Van, Texas; four nephews, James Thomas Anderson IV of Columbia, Va.; Jeffrey Scott Anderson of Lewisville, Texas, Dorsie Denton Page III of Alexandria, Va. and Charles Edward Wilson of Tyler, Texas; seven great-nieces, Stephanie Russell Biermann of Chesterfield, Mo., Katie Ann Arrington of Fredericksburg, Va., Tayler Dingler and Hannah Emily Grace Wilson of Tyler, Texas, Emma Grace and Molly Kate Anderson of Lewisville, Texas and Madigan Page Davis of Van, Texas; three great-nephews, James Thomas Anderson V and Ardan David Anderson of Columbia, Va., Parker Zachary Charles Wilson of Tyler, Texas. She is also survived by a host of cousins and friends.

Honorary pallbearers include Jay Anderson, Jeff Anderson, Steve Russell, Russell Turbeville, Charlie Davis, Chuck Wilson, Dorcie D. Page III and Craig Smith.

Funeral Services are set for 4 p.m. Monday, August 9, 2004 at Metcalf Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Travis Burleson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at Metcalf Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or to Baylor Medical School for Alzheimer's Research or to the American Heart Association.

Gordon A. Collins, age 86, of San Antonio died Wednesday, June 14, 1995. Mr. Collins was a former resident of Bay City and was formerly employed by Alamo Lumber Company of Bay City.

Survivors include wife, Janice M. Collins, San Antonio, TX; sons, Mason Collins and wife Mary Ann, San Marcos, TX; Stephen Collins and wife Kathie, Renton, WA; grandchildren, Julie Marie Collins, Renton, WA; Joseph and Jennifer Collins, San Marcos, TX; brothers, Leslie Collins, Dennis Collins, Roy Edward Collins, all of El Campo, TX; sister, Katherine Champeaux, New Hampshire.

Bert Roy Durochez

Graveside services for Bert Roy Durochez, 52, of Houston were held at 11 a. m. Thursday August 6, 1998 at Cedarvale Cemetery, Rev. Billy Webb officiated.

Mr. Durochez died Monday August 3 in Houston. He was born February 25, 1946 in Galveston to George and Clarice Austin Durochez. He was a Commercial painter in Houston for many years moving there from Bay City.

Mr. Durochez is survived by his mother, Clarice Durochez of Victoria; son, Richard Darrell Durochez; daughter, Sheri Renae Durochez; sister, Clarisa Ann Thomas all of Houston; brother, Gilbert Lloyd “Butch” Durochez of Conroe; half brothers, Tommy Bries of Kilgore, Leroy Bries of Carrollton, Denver Bries and Ivy Bries both [of] Lewisville, Texas.
