Cedar Lane is situated in east-central Matagorda on Caney Creek and in the area where FM 521 crosses FM 457. In the early 1900’s, it was on the route of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad (T&NO—Southern Pacific Spur) from Van Vleck to Hawkinsville. The area to the north of Caney Creek was called Bowieville, site of the Bowie plantation, the Bowie cotton gin, and the Bowie store, which was the plantation commissary in early days. Ernest Ratliff began operating a general merchandise store about a half mile south of Caney Creek at the intersection of the graded road which paralleled the railroad and the road leading to the ranches and farms on Buckner’s Prairie, the Live Oak Community, and Coulterville. It was in this store, Ratliff Mercantile, that the post office was established when the charter was received. Ernest Ratliff served as postmaster until 1918; he was followed by Hubert W. Bowie, Luther L. Stephens, Ethel W. Ratliff, Robert S. Estill, W. Estill, and Hubert W. Bowie until June 30, 1960, when service was discontinued. The Cedar Lane post office was reinstated December 1, 1967, with Nerine C. Bowie as postmaster. Currently, there is an active Baptist Church, two stores, and many persons living in this area, which was called Sugar Land originally, then Bowieville, and now Cedar Lane.
