Mr. Lee Davidson and Ed Anderson were business visitors here Monday.

 

The Home Demonstration Club met with Mrs. Sadie Dodd Monday. Mrs. Sides being present, not being able to finish their business, a meeting was called for next Tuesday at Mrs. Geo. Clark's.

 

The girls club meeting, Mrs. Sides present, was held at Mrs. George Walker's and they worked on their shoe racks, discussed making smocks and their garden goals for this year.

 

Mesdames Hanson, McDougal and George Walker were Bay City shoppers Tuesday.

 

Those from here attending the P. T. A. in Van Vleck Tuesday afternoon were Mesdames Walter Brown, B. N. Cocke, J. Fisher Smith, A. Hanson and Wallace McDougal.

 

Mesdames B. N. Cocke and G. Lawrence were guests in the W. A. Brown home Monday.

Miss Ruth Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wink and family of Wharton visited in the Martin home Thursday.

 

Mr. and Mrs. C. E. DeRoche and family of Bryan have moved to Ashwood.

 

Mrs. Wallace McDougal and Miss Mildred Walker entertained with an apron and tie party at the home of Mrs. McDougal in honor of the birthday of Messrs. George M. Walker and Wallace Walker. Card games, forty-two, dominoes and dancing were enjoyed. Many nice gifts were received by Messrs. McDougal and Walker. Refreshments of white cocoanut birthday cake and hot chocolate were served to the following: Mr. and Mrs. Brown and family, Mr. and Mrs. Moreland, Mrs. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. DeRoche, Jane, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Jess Walker, Misses Lucille Martin, Katherine and Rose Ellen Hanson, Mildred Walker, Rosalie Gernand and Messrs. James _____ and son Martin, Bill and Charlie Walker, Billie and Woodrow Gernand, George Walker, Fred Gernand, Johnnie Hanson and Fisher Smith, Vic Ducros of Bay City and Antone and Stanley Kocurek and Edward Huggins of Pledger and Mr. and Mrs. McDougal and Francis.

 

Francis McDougal spent Saturday and Sunday with his aunt in Palacios.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Penland and children of Conroe were week-end guests in the Guy home.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Luke of San Antonio visited in the W. T. Orrell home last week-end.

Mr. and Mrs. George Clark have had their daughter Georgia and her little son visiting them during the past week. She is returning to her home in Austin this week.

 

Mrs. Straub Roberts, formerly of Pledger, visited in the Geo. Walker home Monday night.

Mrs. Raymond and her daughter, Alene, visited in the Dunbar home Monday.

 

The Ashwood Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. Geo. Clark with 10 members present. After finishing the business meeting, they had a very interesting discussion of the pamphlet "American Must Choose," by Henry A. Wallace, secretary of agriculture, after which they adjourned to have the next meeting with Mrs. W. T. Orrell, Feb. 5.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Dunbar are visiting in Matagorda Wednesday.

A surprise party was given Mr. Fred J. Gernand at the Hanson home Saturday night in honor of his birthday. After several hours of dancing, cake and punch was served. The personnel included Mr. and Mrs. Jess Walker, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. DeRoche, Rosalie Gernand, Vera and Lucille Walker, Marion DeRoche, George Walker, Fred Gernand, Georgia and Jane DeRoche and the Hanson family.

J. Fisher Smith Jr. attended the Fat Stock Show in Houston over the weekend.

Mr. James Martin has gone to work in Wharton. He spent Sunday here with his parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Hale of Bay City were visitors in Ashwood Sunday.

Mrs. Wright of Newgulf visited in Ashwood Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Whiddon of Brenham visited in the W. A. Brown home Tuesday.

The Ashwood Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. J. Fisher Smith with Mrs. Sides present. There were nine members present. They had a very instructive meeting. Chocolate pie and lemonade were served. The next meeting will be on March 26 with Mrs. B. N. Cocke.

Mrs. Kathryn Gibson of Bay City spent Thursday night and Friday with Mrs. Nellie Dunbar and Friday night with Miss Mildred Walker.

Mrs. Wallace McDougall returned home Thursday after spending several days with relatives in Austin.

Messrs. Till Bond and Reed of Bay City are frequent visitors here in behalf of the road work.

Mesdames C. E. DeRoche, J. P. Chastun, George Walker and Will Walker and Miss Bertice Walker were in Bay City Saturday. Miss Bertice Walker had her tonsils removed.

The young people of Ashwood met at the Dunbar home Friday night where they played games and danced. Out of town guests were Miss Kathryn Gibson of Bay City and Mr. Walter Lewis of Austin.

Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Smith, Ralph Gresham and Miss Helen Smith of Gonzales were Bay City shoppers Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Pendleton and family and Mr. Pendleton's brother of Conroe spent the week-end with relatives here.

Mr. C. E DeRoche is now working in Bay City.

Miss Helen Smith of Gonzales spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Fisher Smith.

Mrs. Bessie Mustachio of Houston is visiting relatives here this week.

Miss Eva Smith is visiting relatives in Houston this week.

Miss Ruth Martin and Mrs. Bill Wink of Wharton spent Monday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Martin.

Mrs. J. Fisher Smith was hostess to a party of twenty young people in a camping trip over the week-end. They went pioneer style in a wagon filled with hay and on horseback to the woods where they spent the night around the campfires telling stories, playing games and playing music on the Victrola and accordion, playing jokes on each other and having an imaginary skirmish with the Indians, through the woods, a sunset supper and sunrise breakfast was enjoyed by all. They came home very tired and sleepy, but enjoyed the outing very much and ready to go again soon.

Mrs. Anton Hanson served cake and punch to a small group who gathered to wish Katherine a happy birthday Sunday night.

Messrs. J. Fisher Smith and Wallace McDougall were week-end visitors in Houston.

The Ashwood Woman's Home Demonstration Club met with Mrs. Clark. Two new members were present, Mesdames Jones and Sporoskavoriski. The next meeting will be April 2 with Sporoskavoriski.

A large number of the young people have the measles. During the last week there were twenty ill.

Mrs. Harry Burkhart and little son of Bay City were visitors here Wednesday.

 

Mrs. Wallace McDougal was a Palacios visitor Thursday.

 

The Ashwood Home Demonstration Club visited the Pledger club Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Harold Hall. Mrs. Leola Cox Sides was present and gave a demonstration on pickling. After the meeting, Mrs. Hall served frozen salad, potato chips, crackers and iced tea. Those from here enjoying this meeting were Mesdames J. Fisher Smith, Gregg Lawrence, Anton Hanson, B. N. Cocke, Wallace McDougal, Walter Brown and Will Hasler and Miss Eva Smith.

 

Miss Jessie Lee Walker of Bay City spent the week-end here with her father.

The Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. A. Hanson Tuesday with Mrs. Sides present. Bed linen was discussed and Mrs. Sides gave a demonstration on candlewicking and Bulgarian work. After the meeting punch and cake was served.

Mr. James Martin who works in Wharton visited a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Martin.

Miss Helen Smith of Gonzales spent the week-end here with homefolks.

Miss Rose Ellen Hanson spent Saturday and Sunday in Bay City.

Misses Helen and Eva Smith were Bay City shoppers Saturday.

Mrs. M. A. Guy and son, Dick, went to Lodi to the funeral of her father.

The Ashwood Home Demonstration Club entertained the Van Vleck and Pledger clubs Tuesday at the home of Mrs. J. Fisher Smith with Mrs. Sides present. Twenty-two ladies and six girls were present. Refreshments of frozen fruit salad topped with whipped cream, cheese, wafers, cake and punch were served.

Miss Katherine Hanson, who has been working in Wharton, came home Thursday with a broken collarbone.

Misses Sina Jane Hanson, Marjorie May Brown, Doris Dodd, Joan Clark left Friday for the Texas Centennial on a special car from Bay City, sponsored by the 4-H Club.

Miss Rose Ellen Hanson attended church in Wharton Friday.

Mr. B. W. Martin, Jr., Miss Rose Ellen and Katherine Hanson were in Wharton on business Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Chastun, of Bryan, were visitors in the Chastun home over the week end.

Mr. G. M. Walker and John Hanson visited in Pledger Saturday evening and Sunday.

Mrs. J. W. Walker and Will Walker and Miss Bertice Walker were business visitors in Bay City last week.

Miss Rose Ellen Hanson has accepted a position in Boling.
