Mrs. G. W. Walker and Mrs. A.
Hanson were in Thursday night at the Ashwood
school house at Quite a number of people attended the Christmas tree at the school house last Thursday night. All were delighted with good old Santa. Profs. Pack and Miss Toups, our popular school
teacher, went to Mrs. J. P. Chastun and daughter, Miss Marguerite, went to Wharton Saturday. Mrs. Fred Gernand shipped a lot
of turkeys to Miss Mildred Moody and her friend arrived in Ashwood Saturday to spend Xmas with her sister, Mrs. J. K. Smith. Mr. C. L. Smith of Mrs. G. Newman of Miss Ethel Smith is in Ashwood, the guest of friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Filmore are here
from Quite a number of hogs have been butchered in this community recently. Mr. and Mrs. Anton Hanson spent Xmas with their parents at the Valley View Farm. Quite a fine turkey dinner was served with everything to suit the occasion. Everyone in Ashwood enjoyed Christmas Day in a nice and quiet way. No hard times were in sight. We will close for this year to The Tribune, but the reporter wishes The Tribune a happy and prosperous New Year.

Mrs. J. P. Chastun has received
the sad news of the death of her mother, Mrs. Sarah Paull, aged 94. She
came from Mrs. J. R. Smith and Mother, Mrs. Fellmere, were the welcomed guests of Mrs. Chastun Thursday. Mr. John South and Mr. John Pratt were in Wharton Thursday. Mr. J. P. Chastun and daughter,
Mrs. Gernand, were in Mrs. Houston and Mrs. Walker spent the day with their parents. There will be church at the Ashwood school house January 13. Services both morning and evening and dinner on the ground. Everybody is invited. Mr. Clark of Dallas, Mr. Wood

Miss Izora Toups was at the Valley View farm Sunday, visiting her little pupil Marion Chastun, who has been on the sick list the past week. There will be church services at the Ashwood school house Sunday. Rev. Jas Manis of Burr will conduct the services Sunday, February 10. Everyone is invited to attend. The first aeroplane to visit this section passed over Monday.

There has been a Red Cross Society organized in Ashwood with Miss Toups as leader. We have a membership of twelve and the members are as follows: Mesdames J. F. Smith, Fred Gernand, J. K. Smith, Mr. Fisher Smith, Misses Marian Chastun, Marguerite Chastun, Iszoria Toups, Gheraldine Smith, Master George Newman, C. L. Smith. We are anxious to do our part for the boys at the front. The Ashwood school has become a junior Red Cross club, as teachers and pupils are members and our school is wearing the flag. There is prayer meeting every

Mrs. Fred Gernand and father, J. P. Chastun, went
to Rev. Manis of Wharton came down Saturday to hold the funeral service over the remains of Mr. C. L. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Smith and family, Mrs. C. L.
Smith and daughter, Miss Gheraldine, also Mr. J. K. Smith left Sunday
morning for Mrs. G. W. Newman and Miss Ethel Smith arrived here last Thursday, when they were called home by the death of their father, Mr. C. L. Smith. Mr. W. F. Martin of Miss Iszoria Toups went to Miss Ethel Smith left Sunday morning for Miss Toups is serving Ashwood as postmaster this week, as she has the office in charge during Mrs. Smith's absence. On the second Sunday in April there will be services at the Ashwood school both morning and afternoon, with dinner on the ground. Everyone is urged to be present.

Never before has a teacher worked so faithful with a community and school as a whole to build it up and to give encouragement in our religious work as Miss Toups has. This term of school has in every way been a perfect success and we feel that our teacher deserves the praise. At the close of the program for
the evening Miss Toups made a beautiful talk to the parents and her
pupils, after which the song, "God Be With You Till We Meet
Again," was sung. Then with many regrets we bade farewell to the
1917-18 term of school and our much honored teacher who left the next
day for her home in Beeville. Miss Toups has lived in A. Friend.

Walker were in Mr. J. P. Chastun was a business visitor to Mr. Jno. N. South Thursday. A very enjoyable entertainment was given by the Ashwood school Thursday night. Program and dialogues were appreciated by the patrons of the school. Miss Toups and Miss Geraldine Smith were guests of Misses Marguerite and Marion Chastun Thursday and enjoyed a nice dinner given in honor of the closing of the school. Mr. Rogers, potato inspector of Wharton, was at the Valley View Farm this week and said that every sack of potatoes would class as A1. Mr. Butter of Mr. J. K. Smith was visiting in Miss Iszoria Toups, our popular school teacher the past year, bade us farewell Saturday and departed for her home in Beeville. Rev. James Manis, minister for the Ashwood church, delivered his monthly sermon Sunday. Mrs. Hanson and babies visited the Valley View Farm Sunday. Mr. Jim Manis and brother, William, and Mr. Weaver of Burr visited at the Valley View Sunday. Mr. J. Thompson of A fine rain visited this section Monday which was very beneficial to crops. Mrs. G. W. Mrs. J. K. Smith is in San Antonio visiting relatives. Miss Iszoria Toups of Beeville arrived here late Tuesday for a visit with friends before going to Bay City next week to attend the institute. Messrs. J. K. and J. T. Smith went to Houston on business last week. Mrs. Gernand and Mrs. Hanson were in Bay City Monday. Miss Toups went to Palacios Saturday to visit friends for a few days. Ashwood is suffering from too much rain this week. We are unable to harvest our crops in this section on account of the rain. There will be services both morning and afternoon at the Ashwood church the second Sunday in September—the eighth. Everyone is invited to come. Mrs. J. K. Smith returned home Thursday after an extended visit with relatives in San Antonio. Misses Marguerite and Marion Chastun were the guests of Mrs. C. L. Smith Friday afternoon. Miss Anna Pointer of Pierce arrived in the city Saturday and is the guest of Miss Toups and Mrs. C. L. Smith. The public school of this little city opened for this term on September 9, with Miss Toups as teacher, and there were six pupils enrolled the first day. On account of sickness some of the children were unable to begin when school opened. There will be Sunday School next Sunday afternoon, September 15, at the Ashwood school house, at three o'clock, and everyone in the community is urged to be present, as it is time to elect new officers for the coming year. Rev. Manis filled his regular appointment here the second Sunday. Miss Marguerite Chastun, who has been seriously ill, we are glad to report, is much improved and we trust that she will soon be enjoying good health again. Miss Mildred Moody of San Antonio left Sunday for Houston, after spending the week in the city with her sister, Mrs. J. K. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Chastun went to Bay City Friday. Messrs. J. K. and J. F. Smith left Wednesday afternoon for Angleton, where they were called on business. Mr. Sisk of Bay City was the guest of Messrs. J. F. and J. K. Smith Thursday and Friday. Mr. B. Goodrum went to Bay City on business Friday afternoon. Cotton picking in this district has been on a standstill for the past few days on account of the heavy rain which fell here Thursday night. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown are the proud parents of a fine seven-pound boy, which arrived last Tuesday. Sheriff Bert Carr of Bay City was in the colored district early Monday morning, where he was called on account of the shooting which took place Sunday night. Let every one remember the second Sunday in October--there will be services both morning and afternoon at the Ashwood school house and a basket dinner on the grounds, and every one is urged to be present if possible. The Ashwood Union Sunday School met Sunday afternoon, September 22 at 3 o'clock and reorganized and elected new officers for the coming year's work. Our Sunday School was a success last year, but our aim is to make it a greater success this year than it has ever been. The following officers were elected: Miss Iszoria Toups, superintendent; Miss Marguerite Chastun, assistant superintendent; Mrs. Fred Gernand, secretary and treasurer; the following teachers will be in charge: Miss Toups, Bible Class ; Mrs. J. F. Smith intermediate class; Mrs. M. D. Hanson, primary department. Now let's everyone in the community come each Sunday at 3 o'clock and help us to make our Sunday School an A1 school for we need your help and invite you to come.

Mr. J. F. Smith went to Bay City Wednesday on business. Miss Cook of Austin, who is visiting the schools through this part of the country in the interest of teachers' certificates, was a visitor at the Ashwood school Thursday forenoon. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gernand and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Chastun went to Bay City shopping Friday. Mrs. Ollie Newman of Houston returned home Saturday after a two weeks' visit with her mother, Mrs. C. L. Smith. Mr. Hanson went to Bay City Sunday, returning the same day. Little Miss Rose Ellen Hanson was seriously burned last Saturday morning when she turned over some hot coffee on her self, but we are glad to report that she is doing nicely at this writing. Remember, only one Sunday more until the second Sunday in October, which is church day. Let's everyone come and be on time for the morning service for we need your presence. Mr. J. P. Mr. J. F. Smith was quite ill last week with an attack of influenza, but we are glad to report him much improved at this writing. Mr. Raymond Brown of Sugar Valley was in the city Thursday. Mr. J. P. Chastun and family have all been on the sick list this week with influenza. Dr. Simons of Bay City was called to the home of Mr. J. F. Chastun Saturday. Dr. Scott of Bay City was called to the home of Mr. J. F. Smith Friday. School report for the first month of school in the Ashwood school. The following pupils have neither been absent or tardy during the month: Geraldine and Mae Smith; the following pupils have made a hundred per cent each day in spelling: Misses Marguerite Chastun, Geraldine Smith and Master C. L. Smith. The second Sunday in October, which is next Sunday, is church day in Ashwood. Let everybody do their duty by their church and be on time at eleven o'clock. Ashwood was visited by a norther and rain Monday afternoon. Miss Iszoria Toups went to Bay City Friday afternoon to spend the week end. Mrs. J. K. Smith went to Sugar Valley Friday afternoon.

Mr. J. K. Smith went to Pledger Monday. The Ashwood school has been closed almost two weeks on account of the illness of both teacher and pupils with influenza. Miss Iszoria Toups returned to the city Sunday from her home in Beeville, where she was seriously ill for a week with influenza. Influenza has visited every family in Ashwood, and even though it has been bad, we are thankful to report that there has been no deaths in the white district, and only one in the colored district.

Mrs. Walter Brown and little son returned to their home in Sugar Valley Monday after an extended visit with relatives in Chappell Hill. Mrs. Ollie Newman of Houston arrived in the city Wednesday for a visit with her mother, Mrs. C. L. Smith, and family and to be at the bedside of her little son, George, who has influenza. Mr. J. K. Smith went to Sugar Valley on business Thursday afternoon. Misses Marguerite and Marion Chastun were the guests of Mrs. C. L. Smith and family Saturday. Mrs. C. L. Smith has been quite ill, but is reported to be improving at present. The influenza is almost past in this district as no new cases have developed within the last week. Ashwood was visited Saturday afternoon by a heavy rain and a cold norther. The Ashwood school reopened again Monday after being closed for a period of two weeks on account of influenza.

Mrs. Hurst is ill this week with influenza. Mrs. B. Goodrum, who has been seriously ill, is very much improved. We trust that she will soon be enjoying health again. Mrs. J. K. Smith left Thursday afternoon for Houston, where she will visit relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Jeffus and family left for their return home to Lovelady Saturday. Mr. J. K. Smith left Saturday morning for Houston on business and to join his wife, who is visiting there. Mrs. George Walker has been quite ill, but we are glad to report that she’s on the road to recovery. Mrs. Ollie Newman of Houston left Monday afternoon for her return home after a pleasant visit with her mother, Mrs. C. L. Smith and family. Mrs. H. Goodrum and two sons, Phil and Willis, and little daughter Pauline left Sunday morning for Meldor, where they will visit relatives. Miss Toups has asked that everyone in Ashwood save their fruit pits as the Ashwood Sunday school is collecting a box of all the pits and hulls to send in to the Red Cross. So let’s everyone do our part for the boys at the front. Pecans are plentiful in Ashwood this season, and most everyone has spent the past week here out pecaning. The Union Sunday School of Ashwood meets every Sundry afternoon at 3 o’clock and everyone is invited to come and take part in this great work.

Mrs. J. K. Smith went to Sugar Valley Tuesday for a visit with friends. Prof. W. F. Pack, county superintendent of Bay City, was a visitor to our school Wednesday in the interest of the war work campaign. We, as teacher and pupils, wish to thank the trustees of the Ashwood school for the beautiful United States flag they gave our school. We are indeed proud of it. Mr. and Mrs. B. Goodrum and family returned home Thursday from Weldon where they have been visiting relatives. Mr. Henry Lyman, who is stationed near Houston, is home on a furlough. Under the direction of Miss Toups, the war work campaign has enrolled the following girls of Ashwood who have pledged themselves for one dollar each: Misses Marguerite Chastun, Marion Chastun, Geraldine Smith and Mae Smith. Mrs. F. Gernand and Miss Marguerite Chastun went to Bay City Monday. The Ashwood school has gone over the top in the war work campaign and we also had an enrollment of three new pupils Monday. Mr. B. Mr. J. K. Smith went to Houston Tuesday on business. Mr. J. P. Chastun went to Pledger Thursday. Mr. J. F. Smith has on exhibition at his store in this city two of the largest sweet potatoes ever grown in this district—one weighing seven pounds and five ounces while the other one weighs seven pounds. They were grown about a mile from Ashwood by a colored farmer, Tom Cockrell, and that is only one sample of what Ashwood can produce. J. F. Smith went to Wharton Saturday on business. Miss Iszoria Toups went to Palacios Saturday to spend the week-end, the guest of Mrs. C. L. Haynes of that city. Mr. Jessie Martin of Wharton was in the city on business one day last week.

Miss Tillman, Pointer and Toups came up from Bay City Saturday afternoon and Miss Pointer remained over until Sunday afternoon as the guest of Miss Toups. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown of Sugar Valley were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Smith Sunday. Mr. H. A. Lyman went to Bay City Saturday. On Friday evening, December 29, at 7 o’clock p. m., there is to be a Christmas tree and program given at the Ashwood school by the teacher and pupils. Old Santa will also be there. Everyone is invited to be present and bring any presents you would like to put on the tree. It is free to all and we want everyone to come and enjoy the evening with us. Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Smith motored to Bay City Tuesday morning. Messrs. Moore and Smith left Tuesday afternoon for Houston. Mr. and Mrs. Goodrum went to Bay City Wednesday. Mr. H. A. Lyman went to Bay City Wednesday. Mr. J. K. Smith returned home from Houston Thursday. Dr. Moore of Houston came down Saturday afternoon. Mrs. J. K. Smith left Monday for San Antonio to spend the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Filmer of that city. Mr. J. F. Smith and little son, C. L. Smith, went to Sugar Valley Sunday afternoon.
