Thursday at Ashby Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Dockett officiating. Mr. Hardy was born Dec. 20, 1907, in Fannin, Texas, and died Aug. 14, 1984 at the Veterans Hospital in Houston. He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include mother, Alice Quinney Hardy of Bay City; daughter, Aline Bordelon of Bakers, La.; son, William T. Hardy of Baton Rouge, La.; sister, Goldie Carter of Palacios; and five grandchildren. Arrangements were made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Mr. J. D. Legg, a former citizen of this county, died at Ganado last Saturday at 3:30 p. m., at the age of 81 years and nine months. The body was conveyed to the Ashby cemetery by the Walker company’s hearse and buried there near the scene of his former home. Mr. Legg had lived in Matagorda county since 1905 and was the father of five sons and one daughter. He moved to Jackson county about three months ago. Surviving this good man are his wife, five sons and the daughter. These are Edwin Legg, Daissetta; Kay Legg, Gulf; Early Legg, Palacios; Cecil Legg, Ganado and Hubert Legg of Markham; Mrs. Frank Atkins of Tabor. Also 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive. Mr. Legg had many friends throughout the county who extended their sympathies to the bereaved family.

Funeral services for Laverne Colvin Lewis, 73, of San Antonio, were held June 28, 1999 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Brooks officiating. Interment was at Ashby Cemetery in El Maton. Mrs. Lewis was born Aug. 4, 1925 in Palacios to the late William Fletcher and Della Primrose Hebel Colvin. She died June 24, 1999 at her residence. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, a 1943 graduate of Palacios High School, and a retired Insurance Analysis USAA. She had been a resident of San Antonio since 1943. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Lewis and Charles Bleil, of Fort Worth; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Lynn Lewis and Louise Marie of Austin, Robert Giles Lewis, Jr. of Hondo, and Patrick Randall Lewis and Dianne of San Antonio; sisters Josephine Lucille Hoch of Boerne and Virginia Lang of Austin; a brother, Delbert William Colvin of Beaumont; grandchildren Celeste Renee Lewis, Christie Noel, Robyn Lewis, Randy Lewis, Jim Bleil, Clare Lewis and Suzy Lewis. She was preceded in death by her brother, Virgil James Colvin. Pallbearers were Gary Lynn Lewis, Robert Giles Jr., Patrick Randall Lewis, Charles Bleil, Irven Henson and Robert Tarwater. Grim tragedy struck the home of Mr. and Mrs. James McKissick Jr. last Monday night when their infant daughters, Debra, passed away in her sleep. Our hearts go out to them in this hour of extreme sacrifice. Warren McKissick and Miss Reba McKissick of Houston were home Wednesday to attend the funeral service for their little niece. Mr. and Mrs. John Jones and family of Texarkana, parents of Mrs. James McKissick Jr., arrived Tuesday night to be with the McKissick family during their hour of grief. Other members of her family also came from Houston and Texarkana.

James Luther "Jake" McKissick BAY CITY--J. L. McKissick, a 48-year-old Bay City oilfield worker, was crushed to death Wednesday afternoon when the car on which he was working fell on him in the garage of his home. McKissick's body was discovered by a stepson, Don McKissick, 23, shortly after 3 PM. The elder McKissick, who was at home alone, was installing a spring on the car when it slipped off a bumper jack, pinning him beneath it. He was taken to Matagorda General Hospital where doctors estimated he had been dead for two hours. Justice of the Peace D. B. Hinton returned a verdict of accidental death by suffocation. Funeral services for McKissick will be held at 4 PM Thursday at the Ashby Memorial Baptist Church, the Rev. J. W. Black officiating. Burial will be in the Ashby Cemetery. Besides his stepson, McKissick is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ivy McKissick; three sons, Phillip, James and Paul McKissick; and three daughters, Elizabeth, Sandra and Mary Sue McKissick, all of Bay City.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home for Robert Francis McKissick, 74, of Ashby, who was found dead from shotgun wounds on the front porch of his home by a relative Monday morning. The Rev. J. H. Black officiated with burial in the McKissick family plot in Ashby. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Sam Yeamans of West Columbia; seven brothers, J. B. McKissick of Farmersville, J. F. McKissick of Arlington, J. L. McKissick of Buckeye, D. H. McKissick of Pasadena, George McKissick of Ashby, A. B. McKissick of Velasco, and T. M. McKissick of Alvin.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Markham Baptist Church for John C. Maxwell, 81, well-known rice farmer of Matagorda County. The Rev. Robert E. Black officiated at the services and burial was in the Markham [Ashby] Cemetery.

Mrs. J. C. Maxwell, 71, died Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Maxwell had been a resident of Markham for many years. She is survived by her husband and eleven children. Five daughters are Mrs. W. D. Manning, Mrs. Lee Ann Smith, Beaumont; Mrs. L. N. McRae, Houston; Mrs. C. E. Lucas, Galveston; Miss Theresa Maxwell, Markham; Six sons are W. D., El Campo; R. D. and Ross, Beaumont; A. C., Houston; George W., Devers. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church in Markham at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev. R. E. Black officiating. Burial was in the Ashby Cemetery with Walker-Matchett in charge of the arrangements.
