Wedding Anniversaries |
Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Freeman of near Ganado celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday, Jan. 17, by holding open house for relatives and friends. On January 16th, 1898, in Arkansas, this couple took the vows that united them. They moved to Jackson County about 1918, starting the Freeman Dairy about twenty years ago, later selling to two of their sons. Six sons and daughters and all the grandchildren are living; also their mothers. Mrs. Freeman’s mother is 88 years old and lives at Sparkman, Arkansas and Mrs. Freeman’s mother is 93 years old and lives in Phoenix Arizona. All the children except one were present for the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Freeman have a host of friends who join in saying “many more happy birthdays.”

Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Long, well-known and highly esteemed residents of the Navidad community, celebrated their 68th marriage anniversary December 24, 1941, at which time there was a family reunion under the parental roof. So far as the Herald can ascertain this is a marital record for Jackson County. Should there be other couples whose married life has spanned sixty years we would like to get their names, for we want to publish their pictures and a brief history of their lives. Below we are privileged to give the brief histories of Mr. and Mrs. Long. Mr. M. A. Long was born in Alabama, December 28, 1852. He came to Texas with his parents in the year 1859, settled in Lavaca County, where he spent his boyhood days, and on December 24, 1873, was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Mize. To this union were born eleven children, five of whom are still living. They are J. H. and Chester Long of Navidad, Mrs. S. W. Quarles and Mrs. J. D. Webster of Edna, and Mrs. Joe Whitley of Navidad. They have 27 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Farming was Mr. Long’s chief occupation. Despite his advanced age, he can still get around fairly well with the aid of his walking cane. Mrs. Elizabeth (Mize) Long was born in Louisiana March 9, 1954. She came to Texas with her parents in the year 1859; settled near Dallas; later moved Lavaca County where she met Mr. Long and where they went to school together. She is also well for one of her age. The Herald joins the other friends of Mr. and Mrs. Long in the hope that they will live to celebrate many more happy wedding anniversaries.

Monday at their home in Edna, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Simons held “open house” to a host of relatives and friends, the occasion being their 60th wedding anniversary. This is a celebration rarely enjoyed and we join the many other friends of this venerable couple in extending congratulations and best wishes. Mr. and Mrs. Simons are both natives of Jackson County. In fact, their mothers were native Jackson County citizens. Mr. Simons’ mother, the late Mrs. George F. (Flora Wells) Simons, lived under five separate flags and never moved out of Jackson County. Her husband came to Jackson County with his parents when he was 1 month of age. Mrs. C. S. Simons’ mother was a daughter of the late Dr. Kerr, a prominent character in early Texas history. So we suppose we can speak of them as “pioneer stock” of Jackson County. Here’s hoping that Mr. and Mrs. Simons will be able to celebrate many more wedding anniversaries.

Little Kentucky Items The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. David Williams of Hallettsville was a happy celebration of their children and friends. The celebration was held at the family home on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Williams are parents of four sons, one of whom, W. E. Williams, resides in this community, and the other three in Houston; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. The happy, aged couple, certainly have lots for which to be thankful for they are still well and on their own and have all their children and grandchildren still living. Not a great many people are privileged to celebrate this wonderful golden wedding anniversary, so here is to wish them many more years of happy married life.
