Jackson Countians turned out by the thousands Sunday, July 9, to see the county’s first hospital, made possible by the county’s first citizens—the Mauritz family. Everybody came to see the dedication of the beautiful new 30-bed Mauritz Memorial Jackson County Hospital. The crowd started gathering early—before the 2:00 p. m. starting time, and continued increasing in number until 6:00 o’clock. There were many exclamations of pleased surprised as the visitors wandered through the pretty rooms. All of the rooms are painted in pastel shades and every thing added for the comfort of the patient. The operating room, as well as all of the other units, has the most modern and complete equipment. Flowers decked the halls, each of the rooms and even over-flowed in the kitchen and storage rooms. It seemed everyone was wishing them well. Before the evening was over nearly 3,000 people had registered, and there were some who came Monday to go through the hospital. The hospital received its first patient Tuesday morning. GANADO, July 12.—The new Mauritz Memorial Jackson County Hospital was a going concern here Wednesday, a dream of long standing transformed into a reality by Jackson County tax payers and gifts from community leaders. As a professional preview, physicians and surgeons of Jackson, Wharton and Matagorda Counties, administrative board members and county commissioners made a tour of inspection of the new 30-bed institutions. They were guests at a buffet supper, prepared and served under the supervision of Mrs. J. P. Shanks, hospital dietician. In the reception room, following the supper, Mrs. Louise Jones, hospital superintendent, outlined the policy of the hospital. The hospital was named in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Nils Mauritz, pioneer Jackson County settlers. It was made possible, in part by the aid given by three of their sons, T. N. Mauritz of Ganado, Mayor Harry Mauritz of Edna and the late Fred Mauritz, state senator from Jackson County. A one-story structure of brick, the hospital has, in addition to its 30 beds, an operating room, delivery room, laboratory, and diet kitchen. It is air conditioned. The seven-member board of directors is composed of Roy Selby of Ganado, chairman; O. B. Fenner of Edna, E. J. Etlinger of Ganado, County Judge M. L. Cobb, Jack L. Fletcher of LaWard, Mrs. A. P. Ward of Vanderbilt, and W. R. Farquhar of Lolita.

How many of you in Jackson County are asking the question: "When will our new hospital be ready to accept patients?" At present it is impossible to set an exact date for opening, however, the hospital building should be completed by the middle of April. The equipment is beginning to come in, and if it all comes in by the first week in May, we should be ready to open in June. This is just an approximate date. I would like to take this means of asking anyone who has daughters or friends who are nurses, to contact them and suggest that they come to work in our hospital. We are offering good salaries, excellent working conditions and pleasant surroundings. Just tell them to come and see for themselves. We are offering a one-year training courses for nurses. Anyone of you between the ages of 18 and 50, who are interested in nursing as a profession, come to the hospital office over the Citizens State Bank Building, Ganado, Texas. We will be happy to give you complete information at a personal interview. Louise Jones, R. N., Hospital Superintendent

Some time ago the announcement was made that Miss Carrin Mauritz, daughter of the late Senator Fred Mauritz of Ganado would give $40,000 toward the erection of a modern home for nurses and a Laundry at the Jackson County Hospital in Ganado if the county could match the sum with federal or state aid. Yesterday, Judge M. L. Cobb received a wire message from Congressman Clark W. Thompson that the application for $40,000 for federal aid for the home and laundry had been approved. This means that the commissioners court can now get busy on the plans, specifications, etc., for this addition to the hospital. This is indeed a valuable addition to the hospital set-up and it will mean a great deal to Jackson County.

This committee shall be responsible for arranging for such supplies for the hospital as fresh vegetables and fruits, canned fruits and vegetables, linen and cotton goods, and fresh or frozen meats or vegetables. The Supply Committee is one of the most active and useful committees of the Womens Auxiliary of the Mauritz Memorial Jackson County Hospital. So far they have collected a number of old sheets, cold cream bars and various other jars and bottles for use in the hospital. These containers are very useful for various small supplies such as cotton sponges, etc. There have been some donations of frozen and canned foods such as pickles, peas and tomatoes as well as soup bones and chickens. If you fisherman ever wonder what to do with your surplus catch of fish, it would be greatly appreciated by the hospital. We need soup bones every day and any fresh vegetables are always welcomed. If any ladies of the community are interested in serving on this committee, please notify Mrs. Leon Frels, Lolita, Texas, or any of the following members of the Committee:
Mrs. Lucky Jackson, Ganado Mrs. Leon Frels, Chairman
