Not much is known about the early life of John McHenry. He ran away from his people in Ireland at the age of fourteen, never returned or ever communicated with his people. The date of his birth is not known. He was a pilot in Long’s Expedition to Goliad in 1819. He, along with other members of that unfortunate expedition, was sent as prisoner to Mexico. He was Chief Justice of Victoria County in 1836, but lived in that six mile strip of land that was voted into Jackson County, therefore, he became a citizen of Jackson County.
