Capt. Patrick L. Fitzgerald
Jackson County Pioneer Settler
Patrick
L. Fitzgerald was born April 4, 1825. He moved to Texas from Tennessee
and settled on a farm in Lavaca County. He lived here several years and
moved to Jackson County to the Blair community. Here he bought a home
which is still in possession of his grandson, Emil Johns.
He stayed
with the old methods of farming by using a walking plough known as
“Alabama Lizard” and planted corn by hand. He preferred oxen for
ploughing and hauling goods.
He and
his neighbors bought their groceries at Columbus. They only made one or
two trips a year and it took a week to make. They bought the groceries
in large quantities, coffee by the sack, flour and sugar by the barrels.
He bought cloth for clothes for his family at two to five cents per
yard.
He had no
trouble in securing meat for his family. The woods and prairies were
full of wild beeves and hogs, as well as deer. He built hog traps to
catch wild hogs when he wished fresh meat. He kept a few tame hogs that
he turned out with the old hogs, then drove them all into the hog trap.
Capt. Patrick L. Fitzgerald merited his name but no one knew how. It
seems that no one can furnish many facts in regard to his life. It is
now known when he died.
