Wesley G. Beard

Edna—Funeral services for Wesley G. Beard, 48, of Edna will be held at 2 p. m. Monday from First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Webb officiating.

Military graveside services then will be held under direction of the Channelview American Legion Post 644, in the Enon Cemetery near Edna. Slavik Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Beard was born Nov. 19, 1926, at Houston and married the former Mary E. Kantzler of El Campo in 1965. A lumberman, he formerly lived in Houston and then Bay City, Mich., before coming here about one year ago. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Bay City, Mich., American Legion Post and the McCauley-Abram VFW Post of Bay City. He also was a member of the Magnolia Lodge, Hermann Sons, of Houston.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Mrs. Bennie Otto of Channelview and a son, Robert of Edna, and two grandchildren.

Deborah "Debbie" (Curlee) Boudar
July 25, 1955 - August 19, 2019

Deborah Curlee Boudar, 64, of Rosenberg, Texas passed away on Monday, August 19, 2019. She was born on July 25, 1955 in Ganado, Texas, she was the daughter of the late James Paden Curlee and Marguerite Dorcas Phillips. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Leslie Frank Boudar, two daughters, Amy Malissa Benson and her husband James Bryan Benson of Fort Worth, Texas and Lori Lynne Leftwich of Richmond, Texas; three step-sons, Leslie Scott Boudar of Austin, Texas, Brian Christopher Boudar and his wife Brooke Elizabeth Munson of Brookshire, Texas, and Michael Eric Boudar of Lufkin, Texas; two grandchildren, Logan Matthew Benson and Kaylee Madison Boudar; siblings, Jewel Marie Green of Irvine, California, Jimmy Curlee and his wife Susie of Edna, Texas, Cindy Greer and her husband Mike of Edna, Texas, Sherrie Shutt and her husband Matt of Cameron, Texas, brother in law Barron Muegge of Franklin, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Linda Muegge.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Slavik Funeral Home at 209 N. Allen St. Edna, TX 77957, followed by interment at Enon Cemetery in Edna, Texas

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Garmany and Carden Funeral Home, 1201 4th St. Rosenberg, Texas 77471.

Marlin Carriles

Marlin Manuel Michael Carriles, infant son of JoLeah Jackson Carriles and Lonnie Paul Carriles of Ganado, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

Marlin is survived by his parents; sisters, Lorelei Carriles, Jaylyne Carriles, and Kaylyne Carriles; grandparents, Manuel and MaryAnn Carriles of Port Lavaca, and John and Karen Eardley of Edna; Aunts Criselda Aguilar, Anabele Carriles, and Sarah Baker; uncles, Clark Jackson and Michael Aguilar.

Marlin is preceded in death by his grandfather, Michael D. Jackson.

Pallbearers were Jaylyne Carriles, Kaylyne Carriles, Manuel Aguilar, Dreydan Ashford, and D’Kayden Diggs.

Honorary pallbearers were Maricelda Aguilar, James Loredo, Camdyn Jackson and Myka Muniz.

A visitation was held from 9 am to 11 am, Saturday, Dec. 1 at Oaklawn Funeral Home, in Edna. A graveside service followed at noon at Enon Cemetery.

Betty A. Carroll

Edna—Betty Ann Carroll, 61, of Edna, died Monday, July 9, 2001.

She was born Sept. 20, 1939, in Ganado, to the late William Lorian and Betty Wells Baker. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors: husband, Everett Lee Carroll; sons, Jimmy Lee Carroll, Jeff Alan Carroll and Jon Everett Carroll, all of Edna; sisters, Melva Maresh of Lolita, Helen Fletcher of League City and Virginia Calder of Alvin; brother, Billy Baker  of San Antonio; and five grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: parents; sister, Ethel Moseley; and brother, Gene Baker.

Visitation will be 6 p. m. to 7:30 p. m. tonight at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 10 a. m. Wednesday at  First Baptist Church, the Rev. Jim Gilbert officiating.

Elmer Carroll

Edna--Funeral services for Elmer Lee Carroll, 66, a former Edna police officer, will be held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday from Slavik Chapel, with Rev. U. S. Lucky of Northside Baptist Church officiating.

Burial will be in the Enon Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Glen, Tommy and Donald Johnson, and Jim, Jeff and Russell Carroll.

Mr. Carroll was born Aug. 4, 1907 at Danevang, and had lived in Jackson County since 1926. He was owner of Carroll's Saddle Shop. He had retired from the Edna Police Department after 20 years of service, and previously had been city marshal. He died Thursday in a local hospital after a long illness.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Rhoda Carroll of Edna; three daughters, Mrs. Edith Johnson of Louise, Mrs. Nancy Lawrence and Mrs. Mary Sue Munoz of Edna; three sons, Everett, Wayne and James Carroll, all of Edna; three sisters, Mrs. Bertie Wells of Edna, Mrs. Adelle Keith of Yoakum and Mrs. Tommie Clark of Wharton; three brothers, Orville and Delvin of Wharton and Robert of Edna; and 11 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Maxine Page Carroll

Edna—Maxine Page Carroll, 71, of Edna, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998.

She was born March 17, 1927, in Yoakum, to the late Jake and Madine Wilkerson Page. She was a bank teller for Citizen’s State Bank for five years and Jackson County State Bank for 20 years. She was a member of Morales Baptist Church.

Survivors: daughter, Janice Damborsky of Edna; sons, Larry Jake Carroll and Russell Vernon “Rusty” Carroll, both of Edna; sister, Pearl Jean Hermes of Edna; brother, Wayne Page of Edna; and five grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: sisters, Pauline Foxell and Pearlene Page; and brothers, Jack Page and Jake Page.

Services will be 10 a. m. Wednesday at Morales Baptist Church, the Revs. Joe Wes Rubac and Worden McDonald officiating.

Burial will be at Enon Cemetery.

Rhoda I. Carroll

Edna--Rhoda Inez Carroll, 88, of Edna, died Thursday, March 2, 2005.

She was born June 2, 1917, in Cuero, to the late Daniel and Mary Debault Utz. She was a retired caregiver and a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Survivors: daughters, Edith Johnson of Louise, Nancy Lawrence of Edna, and Mary Sue Eschliman of Victoria; sons, Everett Carroll and Wayne Carroll, both of Edna; sisters, Adell Keith of Yoakum; brothers, Daniel Utz Jr. and Walter Utz, both of Edna; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Elmer Lee Carroll; son, James Carroll; sisters, Lillie Mae Gates; brothers, Willie Utz and Andrew Utz; and one grandchild.

Visitation will be 4 - 6 p. m. today at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Robert V. “Buddy” Carroll

Edna—Robert Vernon “Buddy” Carroll, 65, of Edna died in Victoria Thursday, June 13, 1991, following a brief illness.

Mr. Carroll was born Dec. 5, 1925, in El Campo to the late James Wallace and Elizabeth Rodgers Carroll and was an oil field consultant. He was a member of the Edna Masonic Lodge No. 767 and the First Baptist Church in Edna.

Survivors: Wife, Darlene Carroll; daughter, Janice Damborsky of Edna; stepdaughters, Shawna Wieding and Missy Herring, both of Three Rivers; sons, Russell and Larry Carroll, both of Edna; step-son, Brett Marshall of Pearland; sisters, Alberta Wells of Edna, Adell Keith of Yoakum and Lorine Clark of Wharton; brother, Orvall Carroll of Wharton; five grandchildren.

Lucille Loos Cavass

Edna--Lucille Kennedy Loos Cavass, 84, of Edna, passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009. She was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Inez, to the late Albert Kennedy and Nellie E. Markham Kennedy. She was a bookkeeper for Westhoff Mercantile Co. in Edna. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, David Stell Loos, Sr. of Ganado, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jesse Wayne Loos; first husband, Jesse Wilbert Loos; and second husband, Reuben E. Cavass.

The funeral service will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 at Slavik Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Danny Reeves officiating. Burial will follow at Enon Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Luther Hamilton, James Sestak, Jerry Storz, David Schankle, Ken Sweatman, and the deacons of First Baptist Church.

Clifton Clark

Edna—Clifton Ross Clark, 78, of Edna, died at 2:01 p. m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 1991, in a Victoria hospital after a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Edna with the Rev. Joe Webb officiating.

Burial will be in Enon Cemetery near Morales, under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

He was born Feb. 8, 1912, in Speaks, to the late Richard and Margaret Rebecca Bishop Clark. He was a retired service station owner, having owned and operated Clark Texaco. He was also a rancher and a member of the Baptist Church. He was a Jackson County resident since 1945.

Surviving are his wife, Margery Beth Sheppard Clark of Edna; two daughters, Dixie Jo Ullman of Victoria and Karen Suzanne Baker of Edna; a son, Everal Gray “Butch” Clark of Austin; a sister, Mary Clark Flourney of Speaks; a brother, Thomas Lamar Clark of Corpus Christi and Speaks; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Richard Clark and Alfred Clark; and a sister, Virginia Garner.

Pallbearers will be Manuel Ramirez, Walter Utz, John M. Mercer, Wayne Hunt, Troy Quinn, and Larry Carroll.

Elizabeth Ann Clark

Elizabeth Ann Pearson Clark, of Edna, passed away Monday, March 5, 2012 at the age of 65. She was born in El Campo on Aug. 13, 1946 to the late John Thomas and Vertis Scarborough Pearson.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 48 years, Everal “Butch” Clark; son Clayton Clark and wife Wendy of Marion; sisters, Shirley Person Crabb of Victoria, and Patsy Pearson Quinn of Friendswood; brother, Johnnie “Pete” Pearson of Edna; grandsons, Carson and Connor Clark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Pearson Townsend; brother, Lonnie Pearson; and two nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 7 from 5 – 7 p. m., at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m., Thursday, March 8 at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Enon Cemetery. Pastor Derrick Rickman will be officiating.

Margery B. Clark

Edna—Margery Beth Sheppard Clark, 82, of Edna died Sunday, Nov. 20, 1994.

Mrs. Clark was born Feb. 19, 1912, in Edna to the late Joseph L. and Eula Vera Milby Sheppard. She married the late Clifton Ross Clark on June 2, 1934 in Lavaca County. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher and a charter member of the Enon Cemetery Association. Margery also taught school at Gandy Bend for several years.

Survivors: daughters, Dixie J. Ullman of Victoria and Karen Suzanne Baker of Edna; son, E. D. “Butch” Clark of Edna; sister, Carmen Shutt of Coquille, Ore.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband and sisters, Leah Watkins and Meda Hart.

Services: 2 p. m. Wednesday, First Baptist Church, the Rev. Jim Gilbert officiating.

Mrs. Mary Lou Sheppard Fisher

Edna, Jan. 20—Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lou Sheppard Fisher will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Carl Schlomach will officiate. Burial will be in Enon Cemetery on Morales Road.

Mrs. Sheppard, 82, a widow, died Jan. 16 in Washington, D. C., her place of residence since 1939.

She was a native of Jackson County and lived here until she was 26.

She leaves a daughter, Miss Virginia Fisher of Washington, and three brothers, L. J. Sheppard of Edna, A. L. Sheppard of Los Angeles and W. J. Sheppard of Blair, Okla.

Virginia Flanagan

Edna—Virginia Flanagan, 57, died in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Thursday at St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Hybner officiating.

Burial will be in the Enon Cemetery under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mrs. Flanagan was born Au. 25, 1923 in Hallettsville, the daughter of Mrs. Pearl Gerdes Mascheck, now of Edna, and the late Albert Mascheck. She had resided in Jackson County for 38 years.

Surviving in addition to her mother, is her husband, James Flanagan of Edna; a daughter Mrs. Troy Quinn of Edna; three sons, Casey Flanagan of Edna, James Kelley Flanagan of Victoria and Mike Milby of Houston; a sister, Mrs. W. R. Powers of Edna; four brothers, Travis and Jimmy Mascheck of Edna, Howard Mascheck of Alice and Tommy Mascheck of San Antonio; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Kerry, Robin and Troy Lynn Quinn, Anthony Gerdes, Albert Hollas and Freddie Grudzieski. Honorary pallbearers will be Travis, Howard, Tommy and Jimmy Mascheck.

Mrs. Flanagan was a native of Hallettsville and had lived in this county 38 years. She died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Troy Lee Idom, Jr.

A memorial visitation for Troy Lee Idom, Jr., 74, of Whitesboro (formerly a long time Gainesville resident) will be held at Geo J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville on Saturday, March 12, 2016 from 2 - 4. A private burial will be held at a later date in Enon Cemetery, Edna, TX.

Troy passed away March 7, 2016 in Dallas. He was born November 2, 1941 in Yazoo City, MS to Troy Lee Idom and Jessie Faye (Moore) Idom.

Troy earned the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13 and graduated from Edna (TX) High School in 1959 and Texas A&I in 1965 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He married Sandra Gail Hart on Sept. 7, 1962 in Edna, TX. After a short stint with Reed Roller Bit in Houston, he took a job with National Supply in Gainesville where he and Sandra raised their family. Troy served his community in various ways by coaching little league baseball, working with the Boy Scouts, being a member on the boards of the Cooke County United Way, the Texoma Regional Blood Bank, the Texoma Regional Planning Commission, and the Gainesville Boys and Girls Club. He served on the Gainesville City Council from 1983 to 1987 and was a Regent for NCTC from 2001 to 2008. Troy retired from Boeing in 2001 and he and Sandra traveled all over the world as well as spending their summers in Colorado and winters on the Texas coast. Troy never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Idom of Whitesboro; son Troy (Trae) Idom and wife Kay of St. Cloud, MN; son Bret Idom and wife Cindy of Gainesville; daughter Erin Tolbert and husband Rick of Celina; grandchildren Natalie Idom, Sarah Breshears, Crystal Hurst and husband Anthony, Megan Tolbert and Travis Tolbert; sister Patricia Carroll and husband Larry; sister-in-law Judy Giffert of Marietta, OK; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to issue a special thanks to Medical City Dallas, particularly the MICU, Texas Oncology and the Dr's and nurses on 12th floor for taking extra special care of him and never giving up.

Edith Marie Carroll Johnson, 87, of Louise, passed away August 18, 2021. She was born on September 1, 1933 in Morales to the late Elmer and Rhoda Utz Carroll. Edith was a homemaker, CNA and later in life a seamstress.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Sablatura and husband Mark; sons, Donald Johnson and wife Pam and Glenn Johnson and wife Ginna; grandchildren, Tommy Johnson and wife Kellie, Clint Johnson and wife Ashley, Jennifer Zenero and husband Danny, Nicki Smith and husband Andrew, Michael Carroll, Slone Blackwell and husband Dakota, Zane Johnson and wife Shaye, Jamie Stanley and Brady Thornton and wife Sarah; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Carroll and sisters, Nancy Lawrence and Sue Eschliman.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Johnson; son, Tommy Johnson and brothers, James Carroll and Everett Carroll.

Edna—Nellie Evelyn Markham Kennedy, 94, of Edna, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999.

She was born March 30, 1904, in Hulbert, Okla., to the late Thomas and Lucy Gassaway Markham. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Edna.

Survivors: daughter, Lucille Loos Cavass of Edna; sister, Ola Belle Cox of Carrizo Springs; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Albert Kennedy; sister, Mable Tipton; brothers, Clyde Markham, Warren Markham and Ray Markham.

Dora E. Laughter

Beeville—Dora Emily Laughter, 86, of Beeville, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998.

She was born Sept. 9, 1911, in Cameron, to the late George Tiffany and Flora Lillian Baskins Moore. She was a retired teacher and was a former member of Home Arts Club and was a member of First United Methodist Church and Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors: daughters, Emily Lucille Stephenson of Tacoma, Wash., Virginia Laverne Hainline of Rowlett, Leslie Dix Laughter of Aspen, Colo., and Mary Arnette Jackson of Beeville; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Emma F. Loudermilk

Edna—Emma Faye Willms Loudermilk, 95, of Edna, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1994.

She was born July 20, 1899, in Goliad to the late Emil C. and Dora Louise Schultze Willms. She was a retired bookkeeper for Farm Bureau and an information and referral clerk for Senior Citizen Center. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Sunday School class.

Funeral services for Mrs. L. A. Loudermilk, 62, a native of Jackson County, were held Tuesday at the Buffington Funeral home in Yoakum. Rev. W. George McWilliams officiated, and interment was in the Enon Cemetery, near Edna.

Mrs. Loudermilk was born in this county March 26, 1897. She passed away in the hospital at Yoakum last Sunday.

She is survived by her husband, Yoakum; three daughters, Mrs. Thearl Durand, Beeville, Mrs. C. E. Chick, Beaumont and Mrs. A. G. Garrett, College Station; six grandchildren; a brother, E. V. Milby of Richmond; three sisters, Mrs. D. A. Strane, Mrs. Elaine Partridge and Mrs. Fay Partridge all of Edna.

Louis C. Loudermilk

Edna—Louis Creighton Loudermilk, 78, of Edna, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001.

He was born Jan. 15, 1923, in Goliad, to the late Louis M. and Emma Willms Loudermilk. He was a retired auto parts salesman and a Methodist. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving in World War II on the U. S. aircraft carrier USS Altamaha. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Masonic Lodge No. 767. He was past president and a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge of Edna.

Survivors: sons, Jack Wayne Loudermilk and Patrick Lee Loudermilk, both of Edna and Louis Lane Loudermilk of Sanford, Fla.; sister, Ina Muschalek Botard of Edna; brother, James Loudermilk of San Antonio; and two grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: wife, Jerry Juanita Cox Loudermilk; parents; sisters, Alta Courtney and Virginia Parks.

Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p. m. tonight at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 10 a. m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. Russell Minton officiating.

Burial under the auspices of Masonic Lodge No. 767 will be at Enon Cemetery, Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-2152.

Edna—Louis M. Loudermilk, 70, of Edna died in the Ganado Hospital at 5 p. m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at the Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna with Rev. Harte Pope of the Morales Baptist Church officiating.

Burial will take place in the Enon Cemetery north of Edna.

Urfa Loudermilk

Edna—Funeral services for Urfa Loudermilk, 92, will be held at 3 p. m. Sunday at Morales Baptist Church with the Rev. W. J. Johnson officiating.

Burial will be in Enon Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mr. Loudermilk was born March 11, 1890 in Jackson County and was a member of a pioneer county family. He was a retired oil field employee and a veteran of World War I. He died Friday in a veterans hospital in San Antonio.

He is survived by a brother, L. A. “Dan” Loudermilk of Beeville.

Pallbearers will be James Louis and Louis L. Loudermilk, Bubba Milby, L. A. Parks and Frank Muschalek. Honorary pallbearers will be Harvey Reynolds, Norman Glaze, Kenneth Johnson, Bill Lindberg and Floyd Whitstine.

Edna Youth Dies After Hit By Car – James Michael Lynch

Edna—Funeral services will be held Thursday for James Michael Lynch, 9, of Edna who died in a Bay City hospital Monday afternoon after being struck by an automobile in Bay City that morning.

Services for Lynch will be held at 3 p. m. Thursday at the Morales Baptist Church with the Rev. William Johnson officiating.

Burial will be in Enon Cemetery near Morales under direction of the Slavik Funeral Home.

According to a report from the Bay City Police Department, the accident occurred at 10:30 a. m. Monday on Farm Road 457 in Bay City. The youth attempted to run from a car across the road to a store and was hit by another vehicle.

The investigator was quoted as saying the driver swerved in an attempt to miss Lynch and no charges would be filed. The boy was taken to the hospital where he died about 5:15 p. m.

Lynch was born Feb. 26, 1974, at Jacksonville.

Surviving are his mother, Joy Lynn Montalvo and his stepfather, Ernest Montalvo of Edna; two sisters, Katherine Le Ann Lynch and Joyce Michelle Lynch and a brother, Johnathan Lee Montalvo, all of Edna.

Jimmie "Jim" F. Martin

Edna--Jimmie "Jim" F. Martin, 69, of Edna, passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2008. He was born on Oct. 9, 1940, in Houston, to the late George and Marie Huff Martin.

Jim served our country for four years as a Navy submariner. He was a paramedic-firefighter with the Houston Fire Department and retired after 25 years of courageous service.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jewell Curlee Martin; son, Michael Green and wife Suellen of Pennsylvania; son-in-law, Andy Proffer; and grandchildren, Nick and Rachel Proffer, all of Highlands.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Stacey Proffer.

Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p. m. today, Oct. 15, in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Enon Cemetery. The Rev. Danny Wilson will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jim's nephews, Jason Curlee, Brandon Curlee, Brian Bradley, Cody Bradley, Quentin Shutt, and Nathan Shutt.

Honorary pallbearers are his nieces, Schana Yaws, Kendra "KK" Boone, Megan Muegge, Jamie Glascock, Amy Benson, and Lori Leftwich.

Mr. Elmore L. Milby Died Tuesday, Oct. 4

Tuesday afternoon, Oct 4th, at his home in the Morales section, Mr. Elmo[re] Milby, a member of a pioneer Jackson County family, passed away following a protracted illness.

The funeral service was held at the grave Wednesday afternoon at 3:30, interment being made in the old family buring ground on the Navidad River, the old Enon Cemetery.

Elmo Milby, a son of the late Mr. Bob Milby and his first wife, Mrs. ___ Milby was born at the old Milby home just south of Morales, November 17, 1875, and resided all his life at his home. He was an upright, worthy gentleman, having the confidence and respect of all his neighbors.

He is survived by two brothers and one sister. They are Mr. Oliver Milby of Richmond and Mr. M. H. Milby of Edna, and Mrs. Joe Sheppard; and three half sisters, Mesdames C. P. Laughter of Matagorda, Lora Roberts of Dallas and H. P. Stell of Morales, and one half brother, Mr. H. O. Milby of Morales.

Mr. H. O. Milby Died Saturday At Home Near Morales

Saturday at his home near Morales, Mr. Hermon O. “Tige” Milby, passed away from a heart attack. He had suffered from heart trouble for the past several months and while his death was a shock to relatives and friends it is not altogether unexpected.

The funeral service was held at the Helvelka Funeral Home in Edna Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock, being conducted by Rev. L. E. Barrett of the Edna Baptist Church. The remains were laid to rest in Old Enon Cemetery, a few miles south of Morales, where many of his relatives and friends are interred.

Mr. Milby was born at the old Milby homestead just south of Morales, being the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bob Milby, pioneer residents of Jackson County. His life was spent in this county and at the old home place. He was known to relatives and friends as “Tige” a nickname given him in babyhood by his father. He was a man who enjoyed his friends and he had many of them. He possessed a jovial disposition which meant that he got a lot out of life. He was an honest man and had the respect and good will of a great host of neighbors and friends.

Mr. Milby was united in marriage to Miss Lovie Sandel May 5, 1925, at Huntsville, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, two sisters, Mesdames Verdie Laughter of Matagorda and H. P. Stell of Edna; one half sister, Mrs. Joe Sheppard of Edna, and a half brother, Mr. Oliver Milby. To these the Herald extends sympathy in their time of sorrow

Miss Maybel Milby Died Here Tuesday

Miss Maybel Milby, a member of a pioneer and prominent Jackson County family, died Tuesday, January 1, at her home a few miles north of Edna following a protracted illness.

The funeral service was conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Edna Baptist Church by her pastor, Rev. L. E. Barrett, and interment was made in the Enon Cemetery several miles above Edna., where relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tribute of love and esteem to their friend and neighbor.

Miss Milby was a native of Jackson County and she was the daughter of the late Sheriff and Mrs. ___ Milby. She was born March 2, 1876, and her entire life was spent in this immediate section. She possessed a quiet and amiable disposition and those who knew her well loved her best. Since childhood she had been a member of the Edna Baptist Church and was a Christian in every sense of the word.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Beard and Miss Mattie Milby both of Edna; and three brothers, Messrs. Ben and Oran Milby of Edna and Oscar Milby of Sierra Blanca. To these the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.

Debbie Parks

Edna--Debbie Parks, 50, of Edna, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005.

She was born Nov. 22, 1954, in La Porte, Ind., to the late John and Alexandrina McColm Dalton. She was a nurse and a Presbyterian.

Survivors: husband, Larry Parks; daughters, Heather Linzy of Temple and Jennifer Anderson of Victoria; sons, Jonathan Parks of Edna and Ryan Parks of Houston; and sister, Linda O'Neal.

Services will be 2 p. m. today at Edna Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be at Enon Cemetery in Edna. Oaklawn Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-2221.

Larry Parks

Larry Parks, age 58, of Edna, passed away April 17, 2011. He was born August 31, 1952 to Lawrence Aubrey Parks II of Edna and the late Virginia Faye Loudermilk Parks. He served as both vice president and master electrician for Parks Electric.

Larry was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Family, fishing and riding his Harley were his three loves. His devotion and loyalty to those who know him is irreplaceable. Larry is a true example of friendship, strength, dedication, stubbornness, and most importantly love. He is a hero, enduring love and loss, always putting others first. His heart is now forever whole now that he is reunited with his one true love. We are so very blessed to have shared simply a moment of his presence.

As he joins his wife Debbie Parks, their legacy will live on through their children, Heather and Chris Linzy of Temple, Ryan Parks of Edna, Jennifer and Jonathan Anderson of Victoria, Jonathan Parks of Edna; and grandchildren, Aubrey Faye Linzy, Claire Noelle Linzy and Cadyn Hope Anderson..

He is also survived by a very special friend, Geni Davis; his father, L. A. Parks Jr.; sister, Linda Budd; and brother, Kevin Parks.

A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday April 20 from 5 – 7 p. m. at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Services will be held 10 a. m., Thursday, April 21 at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Enon Cemetery. Reverend Terry Bozarth will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Mark Crull, Bruce Ramsey, Andy Louderback, Gary Loudermilk, Andrew Ureste and Mike Howell.

Herbert M. Phillips

Edna--Herbert Milby Phillips, 80, of Edna, died Wednesday, June 29, 2005.

He was born May 10, 1925, to the late Oscar and Minnie Milby Phillips. He was a retired self-employed painter and a member of First Baptist Church of Edna. He served during World War II in the U. S. Marine Corps.

Survivors: five nieces and one nephew.

Preceded in death: by sister, Marguerite Curlee.

Visitation will be 10 a. m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. Danny Reeves officiating.

Burial will follow at Enon Cemetery.

Mrs. Joe Sheppard Dies at Hospital

Mrs. Joe L. Sheppard, mother of Mrs. C. R. Clark of Edna, died in the hospital at Ganado at 12:30 o’clock this morning after an extended illness.

Funeral services had not been announced early today.

Another daughter, Mrs. C. C. Watkins of Hallettsville, had been making her home here with Mrs. Sheppard.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a. m. from the First Baptist Church, with burial in the Enon Cemetery near Morales.

Survivors are her husband, Joe L. Sheppard, caretaker for Mauritz Village; four daughters Mrs. Carmine Shutt of Coquille, Ore., Mrs. Leah Watkins of Hallettsville, Mrs. Margery Clark of Edna and Mrs. Meda Hart of Elk City, Okla; two sisters, Mrs. Virda Laughter and Mrs. H. P. Stell of Edna, and nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Joe L. Sheppard, 79, Native of County, Dies on Wednesday.

Joe L. Sheppard, 79 year-old native of Jackson County, passed away suddenly with a heart attack about 9:45 a. m. Wednesday in Edna. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Baptist Temple, with Rev. W. N. Blankenship and Rev. W. L. Wootan officiating, and interment in the Enon Cemetery.

Mr. Sheppard was born April 20, 1877 in this county, and was a well-known retired farmer. He is survived by four daughters, including Mrs. Margery Clark of Edna, and two brothers.

Tribute Paid To Joseph L. Sheppard, Jackson Pioneer

Funeral services were held at the Baptist Temple Church on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, for Mr. Joseph L. Sheppard, life-long resident of Jackson County. Reverend W. N. Blankenship and Reverend W. L. Wootan officiated and interment was in the Old Enon Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harley Stell Jr., Howard W. Stell, W. J. Sheppard, Jr., Billy L. Sheppard, Marshall Sheppard and Arthur Sheppard, nephews of the deceased.

He was a descendant of a prominent pioneer family who came to Texas from Missouri in 1850 and settled in the northern part of the county.

Mr. Sheppard, the son of James Polk and Frances Loudermilk Sheppard was born on the old family homestead north of Edna on April 20, 1877.

He was united in marriage on November 7th, 1907, to Miss Eula Vera Milby, who preceded him in death in September, 1953. To this union were born four daughters, Mrs. Carmen Shutt, Coquille, Oregon; Mrs. Lean Watkins, Palestine, Texas; Mrs. Margery Clark, Edna, and Mrs. Meda Hart, Cushing, Okla.

Mr. Sheppard was possessed of a gentle and kindly disposition and was loved by all who knew him, especially little children whose devotion he returned. He loved nature and all that was beautiful and good. His entire life was spent in unselfish devotion to those near and dear to him.

Besides his four daughters he is survived by two brothers, Arthur L. of Los Angeles, Cal., and W. J. “Bill” of Blair, Okla., ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. (Contributed)

Mrs. Sadie Stell, Native of County, Buried Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Sadie Viola Stell, 74, a native of Jackson County, were held at 10 a. m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church here with Rev. James Franklin officiating.

Burial was in Enon Cemetery, with Slavik Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers included P. D. Laughter, Bruce Strane, Bernard Strane, Travis Stell, Henry Milby, Woodrow Milby and Geo. Frazier.

Mrs. Stell was born in this county on Oct. 27, 1889, and was the widow of the late Harley P. Stell Sr. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morales. Mrs. Stell died here Sunday.

Mrs. Stell was a direct descendant of the late Robert Milby who came to Jackson County from Sussex County, Delaware in 1830. He served in the Army of the Republic of Texas in 1836, and his son, Robert Jr., served in the Civil War. The family settled in the Morales area. Her mother’s parents, the Rev. J. I. Loudermilks, came to Jackson County from Georgia in 1853.

She is survived by two sons, Harley P. Stell of Edna and Howard Stell of Bay City; and three grandchildren.

Dewey Strane

Edna—Funeral services for Dewey A. Strane, 77, of Edna will be held at 10 a. m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Russell Moon officiating. The body will lie in state at the church for an hour before the services.

Burial will be in the Enon Cemetery near Morales, under direction of the Jackson County Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Harvey Reynolds, Ira Sklar, P. K. Miller, Milam T. Simons, C. G. Shoemate and Dutch Weigand. Honorary pallbearers will be John Henry Long, Wayne Miller, Andy Anderson, Johnny Price, Rolar Watson Farrell Watson, Nolan Kerley, Bill Simons and Avery Walker.

Mr. Strane, a native of the county and a retired stockman and farmer, was born Nov. 6, 1898, at Morales. He died at his home Wednesday after a sudden illness.

C. C. Watkins, 55, Highway Builder, Buried on Monday

Funeral services were held Monday at Slavik’s Funeral Home for Chester Clifton Watkins, 55, of Houston, the husband of the former Leah Sheppard of Edna. Rev. W. L. Wootan of First Baptist Church officiated and interment was in the Enon Cemetery.

The pallbearers, all highway contractor officials, were Bill Parker, Cap Brown, A. I. Carter, Ray Smother, Virgil Harrell and N. M. Hubbard.

Mr. Watkins was born Dec. 18, 1903 in Gilmer, Texas and recently resided at 11718 Hempstead Rd., Houston. He passed away Sept. 11 in a Houston hospital, following an illness of three weeks. He was a superintendent of highway  construction.

Mr. Watkins is survived by his widow, Mrs. Leah Watkins of Houston; a son, B. J. Watkins of Houston; his father, A. L. Watkins of Gilmer; a sister, Mrs. Doshie Brow of Kirbyville; and two brothers, A. E. Watkins of Bay City and D. L. Watkins, with the Air Force in Germany.

Mrs. Leah Watkins

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Leah Naomi Watkins, 69, of Edna and member of a pioneer Jackson County family, will be held at 1:30 p. m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Edna with the Rev. Joe Webb officiating.

Burial will be in the Enon Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mrs. Watkins, a native of Morales in Jackson County, was a daughter of the late Joseph Sheppard and Eula Milby Sheppard. She was a retired bookkeeper for Wade Bros. Co. here; a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Historical Society of Jackson County, the Philatelic Society of Port Lavaca, and a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a stepson, Billy Joe Watkins of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Carmen Shutt of Coquille, Ore., and Mrs. Margery Clark of Edna, and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Don and Clyde Wade, Henry Milby, Butch Clark, Bobby Durham, Mike Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church.
