William H. Woodard
Born: 01 April 1820 in North Carolina
Died: 10 January 1887 in Navarro County, Texas
Married: 28 Oct 1847 in Retreat, TX to Mary Elizabeth (Polly) Wallace
As a young man in Texas he went to school in the old town of Travis in Austin Co. near Kenney, TX. He attended the same school with Martin M. Kenney, son of John Wesley Kenney, the Methodist minister for whom the town was named.
Lived near Retreat from about 1844 to 1860.
In 1860, William H. Woodard traveled by horseback to Navarro County and he moved his family there in 1861.Mary Elizabeth (Polly) Wallace

Daughter of Caleb Wallace and Elizabeth Wingfield. Caleb was one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred early settlers.Children:
Mary Elizabeth, Josiah, William, Caleb, Nancy Catherine, Jonathan, Paulina Eliza, Frances Ann, Monroe, and Oliver
W.H. Woodard was a member of the old frontier's Regular Rangers in General Bogart's company in the Rio Grande region in 1842 and returned with General Somervell's company in 1843. In 1851 he received his claim for $90.00 for service in the Somervell Campaign.
