Special to the News - Sherman - Jan.2 - Funeral services for William Miles Chaffin, 83 years old, who died in Sherman Friday at noon, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Walnut Street Church of Christ. Burial will be at West Hill Cemetery. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. W.T. Rankins of Sherman, and three sons, R. B. Chaffin, Ada, Ok; and W.M. Chaffin Jr. and Fred Chaffin both of this city. Mr. Chaffin, who was the oldest citizen of Sherman in the point of residence, was born in 1844, locating near Sulphur Springs, on the Sabine River. He lived with his parents there until 1848, coming to Sherman that fall. His father purchased 113 acres of land in East Sherman. The land extended from Lamar Street on the south to the Texas & Pacific Railroad on the north and from Willow Street on the east to the Houston & Texas Central Railroad on the west. The present Union Passenger Station is located on the northwest corner of the tract. The old Chaffin homestead was a large log house located on East Houston Street, on the property where R.A. McCrary now resides. Mr. Chaffin lived at this place until his marriage to Miss Louisa Jane Smith Oct 12, 1870. His wife died July 10, 1911. When the call came for volunteers during the Civil War, Mr. Chaffin enlisted under the command of Capt. Curtis R. Suttan, who was in charge of the Texas Rangers. The company acted as body guard to Gen. J. Bankhead Magruder. R.A. Chapman Sr. of this city was a member of the company with Mr. Chaffin. He and Mr. Chapman (sic) had been constant friends before and since the war."
