Sherman Democrat March 19, 1950 pg.1 Fred was born at home in Sherman, Texas the son of Captain Noble Allan and Virginia (Jennings) Birge. He died at a local Sherman hospital where he had been a patient for five days. Fred wed Miss Florence Helen Bledsoe on 29 June 1907 in Sherman, Texas Their children were Fred Johnson Birge Jr., Albert Bledsoe Birge, Florence Helen Birge, Virginia Anne Birge (twin of Florence Helen) and Joseph Bledsoe Birge. He received his education at the old Capt. LeTeller's Academy in Sherman. He was associated with the Birge-Forges Company in Sherman as a cotton broker. For ten years he also operated a service station business in Sherman. Mr. Birge was a former director of the Red River Valley Fair Association. He was also known for his showmanship with horse shows, serving as ringmaster of the horse shows in Sherman until his retirement. He was a member of the Episcopal Church. Survivors include one son, Joseph Bledsoe Birge of Sherman; twin daughters, Mrs. Frank a Mosher of Santa Monica California, and Mrs. Charles O. Rountree of Oak Grove, Louisiana; two sisters, Mrs. Jesse Holt and Mrs. Moore Dorset both of Sherman; one brother, Allan N. Birge of Sherman; three grandchildren' four nieces and eight nephews. Funeral services were held at the Dannel Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. William Tate, rector of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Sherman. Mrs. Birge Dies Of Heart Attack Mrs. Fred Birge, 74, member of a prominent early-day Sherman family, died of a heart attack at 5:35 p.m. Monday at a hospital here. She had been an invalid for eight years. Mrs. Birge was the former Florence Bledsoe, daughter of the late Circuit Judge and Mrs. Joseph Bledsoe. Judge Bledsoe served Grayson, Fannin and Collin Counties. She was once an accomplished horsewoman, having won a number of prizes with her show horses in Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dannel Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. William Tate Young, pastor of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Birge was born July 22, 1888 in Sherman. She majored in music at Kidd-Key College here. She was married here in 1908 to the late Fred Johnson Birge. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. Mrs. Brige's home at the time of her death was on Breezy Hill, U.S.Highway 75, north. Surviving are a son, Joseph B. Birge; twin daughters, Mrs. Frank Mosher of Rolling Hills, Calif., and Mrs. Charles O. Roundtree of Palernbang, Sumatra; and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Sidney Irvine of Oklahoma City, Lee Hudgins, Arthurs Hopkins Jr., Ernest Thompson and Neilson Rogers, all of Sherman, and O.C.Way of Bells.
According
to the obituary that appeared on the local Sherman Democrat newspaper,
dated 30 March 1939, page 11, Sonny was fatally injured when crushed by
a train near Los Angeles, California. He was survived by his parents; a brother, Joe Birge and two sisters, Virginia Ann and Florence Helen Birge, all of Sherman, Texas. Funeral services were officiated by the Reverend George Bennett, rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Sherman.
