R.A. CHAPMAN, 97, DIES AT SHERMAN
Sherman - R.A. Chapman, Sr., who last month passed his ninety-seventh birthday, died at his home on East Lamar Street, east Sherman, at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
He had been in declining health for the infirmities of age for the last several years.
Mr. Chapman was born in Tennessee ninety-seven years ago and came to Texas before the Civil War, locating in Sherman before the war.  He was engaged in the drug business.  At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in the Confederacy and served throughout the conflict.  Returning to Sherman he again engaged in the mercantile business and was one of the founders with the late Judge Binkley of the Merchants and Planters National Bank, and for many years had been one of that institution's vice-presidents as well as a large stock holder.  He also was one of the owners of the Chapman Mill here.
Mr. Chapman had been a Mason ever since he was 21 years old, and was, therefore,  one of the oldest Masons both in years and point of service.
He is survived by one son, Dick Chapman, Jr. and two daughters, Mrs. Allison Mayfield and Miss Mayme Chapman.
