 Walter W. Dumas 1879 - 1929 DAN H. DUMAS DIES SUDDENLY AT HOME HERE Dan H. Dumas, one of the pioneer citizens of the county, died suddenly at his home, 808 South Austin street, Thursday evening about 7:30 o'clock. Mr. Dumas was in his yard doing his chores, when he was suddenly attacked with a hemorrhage and expired before he could be taken into the house. He was 73 years of age. News of Mr. Dumas' death Friday morning was received with sincere regret over the entire city. Born December 21, 1847, on the farm of his late father, J.P. Dumas, six miles east of Van Alstyne, and a life long resident of the county, Mr. Dumas was one of the true pioneers of the section. For many years he was engaged in grain and hay raising on his farm, two and a half miles southwest of Sherman. He removed into Sherman to his present home several years ago. A successful land surveyor, Mr. Dumas served the county for several terms in the office of county surveyor, and held the distinction of being the only Republican to have served Grayson County in public office since the Civil War. His personal intergrity as a citizen and his capabilities as a surveyor broke down any party prejudice against him, and in the election two years ago he was again elected to the office of county surveyor, but on account of his age refused to qualify. His health has been declining for some time, but he was regarded as being in no immediate danger, and his passing was altogether unexpected. Mr. Dumas was married to Miss Pinkie Shipp in 1874 and is survived by his wife and by two children born to the union. These children are Mrs. Lee Shivel, of Sherman and Walter Dumas of California. Completion of the funeral arrangements was being postponed Friday morning pending word from this son. Mr. Dumas is also survived by three brothers: Louis Dumas of Sherman, and S.F. and T.M. Dumas of California, and a sister, Mrs. Will Leslie, of Sherman. Mr. Dumas' father, the late J.P. Dumas, settled on Sister Grove creek, east of Van Alstyne in 1845. His sister, the late Mrs. Reese Cannon was the first white girl born in Grayson County. Funeral Services Announced Funeral services will be held at the residence at 3 p.m. Saturday, conducted by Dr. C. A. Spragins, pastor of Travis Street Methodist Church.
