Since our last two issues two new cases of smallpox have developed - Stephen Carter, son of J.Q.A. Carter and a child of Mr. Smith, who lives in Carter's yard.  This is the same place where the other cases occurred, and the disease is confined to that locality.  We shall inform our readers if other cases occur.  No danger is apprehended of its spreading, if proper precautions are observed.--- (Sherman Patriot)

DEATH OF STEPHEN CARTER
We learned by a private note Friday morning that Stephen W. Carter, son of J.Q.A. Carter of Sherman, died Wednesday evening at half past four o'clock of smallpox.  This family has been terribly afflicted.  Only a few days ago they lost an infant son of this same disease, and nearly every member of the family has been sick.
All the old citizens of Denison remember Steve.  For several months, just after we commenced the publication of The News, he was in our employ, and it was from his hand our city patrons received the paper.
Steven was born in Free Stone county, Texas, February 17, 1860.  He was a good kind-hearted honest boy, and we thought a great deal of him.  We can hardly realize that one so full of health and energy, when we saw him last, has been laid in the grave.  His parents, brothers and sisters have our heart-felt sympathy in their irreparable loss.
Stephen had the best medical attendance.  He was waited upon by Drs. Freeman and Winn, of Sherman, and Dr. Dowell of Galveston, and all that human skill could devise or affection suggest, was done to relieve his sufferings, but in vain.
