JIM SPEARS, FORMER PEACE OFFICER, DEAD
Succumbs to Heart Trouble Following Illness of Several Weeks

Jim A. Spears, former county peace officer, and for a number of years a well known Sherman citizen, died at his home, 228 North Cemetery street, Friday afternoon at 5 o'clock, following several months' illness with heart trouble.  Mr. Spears was confined to his bed for but a few days before his death, which came as a distinct surprise to his many friends over the county.
Funeral services will take place Sunday morning at 10 o'clock from the late home, conducted by the Rev. T.L. Holcomb, pastor of First Baptist Church and burial will be in Cannon Cemetery near Van Alstyne.
Mr. Spears lived for a number of years at Van Alstyne, where he served two terms as constable.  He moved to Sherman to become a deputy sheriff under the administration of Sheriff Lee McAfee, and is credited with being a most competent officer.  While serving as an officer, he worked up a number of important cases.
Mr. Spears is survived by his wife, and by the following sons and daughters: Harold Spears, Mrs. Edwin Smith, Ben Spears, Miss Catherine Spears, and Jack Spears, all of Sherman.

RETIRED CITY CLERK JACK SPEARS DIED
Jack Spears, 76, former city clerk of Sherman who retired in 1984, died Sunday afternoon at presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.  Spears suffered from heart ailments the past 2 years.  He first had heart surgery in April 1987.
Funeral services were under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home.
Spears began working for the city in 1956, serving in several positions.  He was named city clerk in 1962 and remained in that post until his retirement in January 1984.
He was born April 19, 1912 in Sherman, son of J.A. and Estelle Spears.  He graduated from Sherman High School in 1932 and received his bachelor's degree from Austin College in 1948.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1922 and was also a member of the Sherman Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Pythias, American Legion, Lions Club and Optimist Club.
He and his wife, Mary, who is employed by the Sherman Chamber of Commerce, resided at 805 LaSalle Drive.
Surviving are his wife; and 2 sisters, Catherine Cranford of Sacramento, California and Leta Spear Smith, of SHerman.
The family asked that memorials be made to the education fund of the First Baptist Church of Sherman, the Wood Street Church of Christ building fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.
