J. K. P. Gatewood a young man in the prime of life, passed away at the residence of his mother on Montgomery, between Cherry and King streets, yesterday at 10 a.m. from fever. The deceased was known to almost every one who has made their home in Sherman for any length of time, and there yet remains to be found one who can say that Polk Gatewood ever harmed them intentionally. He had his faults; we all have them. He was generous to a fault,a true friend, and forgetful of wrongs to himself; we are not all thus. He obeyed the laws of his land and submitted to its mandates; can all say this?He leaves a mother, a brother, and sisters to mourn his death, and to forever hold green in the memories the son and mother who never spoke a harsh word to them. If Polk Gatewood has a fault it is hidden from view by a multitude of good qualities not generally possessed by man and who is it who doubts that charity, brotherly and filial affection, and kindness, and adherence to the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," will have blotted out the charge of his missteps when he never injured any one except himself. He was laid away in the city cemetery yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock, and is now sleeping the last long sleep, and let it be trusted is reaping the benefits of his kind heartedness below. He was at one time a member of the Baptist church, and the funeral service were conducted by Dr. Carpenter.
