 West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas  Sam L. Knight 14 July 1936 - 29 October 2009 Jan R. Knight 16 March 1936 - Sam Lanear Knight, 73, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Arrangements
were under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home. A celebration of Sam's
life was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 2009 at First Baptist Church
in Sherman. Dr. Mike Lawson and Dr. Tom Brandon officiated.
A private interment was held Saturday at West Hill Cemetery.
Sam was born to S.L. and Marie Kidd Knight on July 14, 1936 in Sherman. After graduating from Sherman High School in 1954, he entered the University of North Texas and completed his BS degree there in 1958. During his years at UNT he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. While attending college, he met Jan Roberson of Grand Saline, and they were married on Feb. 17, 1957. Sam started his career with Knight Furniture Company in 1958 and served as secretary and vice president before becoming president in 1989. He retired in 1999. Active in the community, he served as vice president of the Sherman Jaycees, manager of Little League Baseball in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. He was also vice president and president of Grayson Retail Merchants Association and served on the Board of Texoma Christian School. At the age of 10, Sam became a Christian and was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Junior Coordinator, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and trustee. He deeply loved and was devoted to his family. A regular spectator at the grandchildrens' special events of choir, dance recitals and athletic activities, he was known to them as a loyal supporter and constant source of encouragement. An avid quail hunter most of his adult life, Sam enjoyed working with and training bird dogs. Golf was a pastime that he especially enjoyed, and it brought many friendships. Predeceased by his parents, Sam is survived by his wife Jan; a daughter, Gina Gunn and husband David; son Jeremy L. Knight and wife Sherry; five grandchildren: Sam Knight and wife Jennifer, Jake B. Knight, Beth Knight, Joey Gunn and wife Leslie, and Julee Gunn; great grandchildren: Samuel Teddy and Jessy Knight. Pallbearers were Samuel Knight, Jake B. Knight, Joey Gunn, Alton Cox, Larry Krum, and Jack Noble. Honorary pallbearers were L.T. White, Sutton Chambers, Bill Robinson, Dale McCleskey, Cam Gillespie and Gene Mitchell.
