CITY CLERK OF SHERMAN PASSES AWAY AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS
Charles E. Savage, city clerk and well known citizen of Sherman, passed away just before midnight Saturday following a short illness with appendicitis.  Mr. Savage was 52 years of age at the time of his death, and was ill for about one week.  His condition was critical for 3 or more days before the end came, and it was therefore not altogether unexpected, but nevertheless a great shock to the entire city.
Mr. Savage had been city clerk for more than a year, succeeding W.G. Banks.  He has always taken an active and constructive part in municipal affairs, and was one of the first to advocate the present commission-manager form of government which Sherman has.  He was elected a member of the city council under the new form of government, and as a councilman did a great deal of constructive work in getting the new government organized and under way.  Mr. Savage resigned from the council and as head of the shipping department of the Hardwicke-Etter Company here more than a year ago to become city clerk.  In the capacity of city clerk he proved himself to be a competent and faithful servant of the people.

BIOGRAPHICAL
Charlie Savage, as he was best known to his friends, was a native of Mississippi, born in 1867.  At the age of 8 years, he came with his parents, who were pioneer settlers of thie county in Whitewright, where he grew to manhood and made his home until 15 years ago when he removed to Sherman to reside.  He became connected with the Hardwicke-Etter wholesale hardware company of this city, and remained in the employ of that company until about a year ago.
Surviving Mr. Savage are his wife, Mrs. Belle Savage, and the following children: Mrs. Joe Thorn of Dexter; Mrs. Claud Brewer of Cumby; Miss Nina Lee Savage and William Savage of Sherman.  His mother, Mrs. E.W. Savage of Whitewright, and the following sisters and brothers also survive him: Mrs. F.C. Short of Sherman; Ed Savage of Denison; John and Ben Savage of Whitewright; Mrs. W.H. Bray of Munday, Texas; and Robert Savage of Caney, Oklahoma.
Sherman has lost no more valued citizen than Charles Savage in the many recent deaths, nor has any death caused more genuine sorrow to the city as a whole than that of this conscientious city servant.  Needless to say his passing was a great shock and the cause of much sorrow to his family and close personal friends.  The whole community, however, joins in extending to these the most heartfelt sympathy.
Funeral services for Mr. Savage took place from the family home on South Montgomery street Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, followed by interment at West Hill Cemetery.  A large number of friends, including many from Whitewright, Mr. Savage's former home, and other out-of-town places followed the remains to the cemetery, where services were very beautiful, among them being wreaths sent by the fire, police and other municipal departments.  The following were the pall bearers selected: George Hardwick, Lon McKown, O.J.S. Elllington, Barlow Roberts, Press Southerland of Whitewright, Tom Morrison, Joe Daugherty and Joe F. Etter.
