 West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas Sherman Courier July 11, 1917 S. H. Smith Dead One of the Oldest Citizens of Grayson County Passed Away Yesterday. Funeral This Afternoon. A long, useful and honorable life came to an end yesterday afternoon at four o'clock when S. H. Smith of 921 N. Harrison Ave. entered peacefully and without suffering into the eternal rest. Mr. Smith was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky, on Oct. 13, 1824. He was married in 1851 to Miss Elizabeth Hunt of Cumberland and with her passed eighteen years of happy wedded life. To them were born nine children, four of whom are still living. These four are Mrs. Frances Carter of Jefferson. J.W. Smith of Sherman, C. S. Smith, living five miles north of Sherman, and W. F. Smith of Oklahoma, who has not been located. He follows the occupation of car contractor. In 1870 Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Miller, also of Cumberland county, who survives him. Of this marriage there were three children, Mrs. Minnie Klepper of Dallas, Marshall Smith of Sherman and Mrs. Ione Carter of this city. Mr. Smith was a Mason in good standing for 44 years and had been a member of Travis Lodge of this city for about thirty years, or since he came to Texas. In early years he was engaged as a pilot on the Cumberland and Mississippi Rivers and had the distinction of serving on a steamboat with Abraham Lincoln. He was one of the four men in Cumberland county voting for Lincoln when the latter ran for the Presidency. For fifty years Mr. Smith was a consistent and faithful member of the Methodist church and had been a member of Key Memorial church for some years at the time of his death. He farmed for about twenty years after coming to this county retiring some ten years ago to make his home at 921 N. Harrison Avenue. Mr. Smith was a good man, a good citizen and an honorable and upright man in all his dealings. He had maintained good health until within the last three years. His last illness began on Saturday and was a gradual slipping away from life. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at Key Memorial church, Rev. A. A. Kidd officiating. After the services at the church, Travis Lodge A. F. and A. M. will take charge of the remains. Interment will be in West Hill cemetery.
