West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas Robert M. Grubbs 12 December 1825 - 21 April 1897 Major of the 84th Indiana Volunteers The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, April 25, 1897 pg.1 MAJOR GRUBBS DEAD Intelligence was received in the city Wednesday of the sudden death of R.M. Grubbs, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D.W.C. Davis, Sherman. The Register furnishes the following account of the Major's death: "Major Grubbs went out into the rear of the residence of his daughter, Mrs. D.W.C. Davis, North Travis street and was in a few minutes found dead by his grandson. Everything indicates it to be a case of sudden heart failure. Last evening he was down town, chatting pleasantly with old veterans and friends, and this morning there did not appear the least indication of the approaching dissolution. The deceased was a native of Kentucky, born at Cynthiana December 12, 1825, hence was his 74th year." The deceased was a pioneer citizen of Denison, casting his lot here in 1872. He was connected with the hardware and implement house of his son-in-law, D.W.C. Davis. He was assistant postmaster to Captain Dan Weaver and was postmaster during the Garfield administration. In 1880 he located at Sherman. Under the Harrison administration he was appointed U.S. commissioner by Judge Dave Bryant and was holding the position at the time of death. The deceased was elected mayor of Denison in 1876. He has 3 daughters living and one dead. The major served in the federal army and was a member of the G.A.R. Post at Sherman. It is with the deepest feeling of regret that the Gazetteer chronicles the death of Major Grubbs, and the feeling will be shared in by a large number of our people. D.W.C.
