Karchmer... Ray Exstein Tillman 20 January 1889 - 3 December 1978 Franciska "Fran" Tillman, 93, a life-long resident of Sherman passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at her home after a long illness. Fran was born on June 5, 1916 in Dallas, daughter of Sidney Hess Tillman and Ray Exstein Tillman. Her paternal grandfather, Dr. Emanuel M. Tillman was one of the founders of Temple Emanuel in Dallas. After the death of her father, when she was age 2, she and her mother moved to Sherman to live with her grandparents, Ike Exstein and his wife, Eva Doppelmeyer Exstein, prominent members of the Jewish community of Sherman. She attended Austin College and graduated from the University of Texas in 1937. After graduation she worked for the National Life and Accident Insurance Company when she retired. Fran was a longtime member of the WNJ Medical Center Auxiliary and donated more than 19,000 volunteer hours and was honored as a Lifetime WNJ Auxiliary Member in 2009. She was a lifelong member of the Sherman Business and Professional Women's Club and volunteered at Home Hospice of Grayson County and Wakefield School where she helped children learn to read. A long with Alan Smith, she helped found the Sherman Community Players and the Sherman Community Series. For many years she attended the Covenant Presbyterian Wednesday Study Group. She was a member of Temple Beth Emeth in Sherman. She is survived by cousins, Pauline Finberg and Georgann Lieb and husband, Allen and son, Ben, of Lynnfield, Massachusetts's; Barbara Teller and husband, Gary, of Dunwoody, Georgia; Betty Sherman and husband, Ed, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Beverly Collin and husband, Kevin, of Stillwater, Oklahoma; Ronald Stone of Austin; Martin Stone and wife, Mary Ann, of California; and all their children. She leaves be hind dear friends: Bobbye and Arthur Stoolfire, the Wynne family, Betty Stephens, Sheba Stephens, Jean Henry, Marti Kaufman, Mike and Bett Mitchell, all of Sherman; Rudolph Fellner of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and her faithful caregivers, Letha Greet, Janet Graham, Becky Largo and Donna Berry. A memorial service was held Wednesday afternoon, May 5, at Temple Beth Emeth, Sherman. Rabbi Anna Bonnhiem officiated. Family and friends are cordially invited to a Celebration of Life memorial service Friday morning, May 14, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sherman. Rev. Neill Morgan officiated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, Home Hospice of Grayson County or the Wilson N. Jones Hospital Foundation.
