Lentz 1932 - 1916 Sherman Daily Democrat Monday, November 13, 1916 pg. 4 UNCLE BILLY LENTZ DEAD Death Removes Another From the Ranks of Sherman PIoneers Balaam Lentz, 85 years of age, better known to the people of Sherman as "Uncle Billy", passed away at 9:15 o'clock Sataurday night and was laid to rest in West Hill Cemetery Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, following services conducted at the late residence, No. 905 East Chaffin street, by Rev. Geo. F. Cuthrell,, pastor of the Central Christian church. Mr. Lentz was born in Virginia in 1831 [sic] and came to Texas in 1872 and had lived in the house where he died for a period of almost 45 years. His sole surviving relative is a step-son, J.T. Knott, a linotype operator on the Democrat. Mr. Lentz was an ex-Federal soldier. He entered the service of the Union Army August 6, 1862, joining Company C, 96th Ohio Regiment and was discharged July 7, 1865, having served through the entire war. The following were pallbearres at the funeral yesterday: C.B. Walker, C.G. Nash, G.W. Myers, G.W. Matlock, and Henry McClellan, all of Sherman; and A.M. York of Denison. "Uncle Billy" has been a familiar figure in Sherman for many years and was universally liked for his genial disposition and sound philosophy of life and he will be missed by a large circle of friends.
