SHERMAN - Funeral services for Alton C. Cox were held Monday morning, January 12 at the First Baptist Church of Sherman. Dr. Mike Lawson officiated. Private committal services with military honors was held at West Hill Cemetery. Mr. Cox, 83, passed away Thursday, January 8 at Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center.
Alton was born December 30, 1931 in Bonham, Texas, son of Jim and Lois (Cashion) Cox. He graduated from Bonham High School in 1949 and began work as carpenter. In 1951, Alton joined the US Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the US Battleship "Wasp." He was discharged in 1955 at the rank of Aviation Metalsmith AM 3. On January 2, 1954 he and Carol Ann Smith were married in Durant, Oklahoma and were accompanied by Bobby Frazier and Eva Jo Lacewell.
After his military service, Alton went to work at Foxworth-Galbraith in Sherman. In 1956, Alton received a Certificate of Building Management from SMU. He was part owner in Accent Paint and Sherman Lumber and started Cox Construction in 1962. He operated Cox Construction for 40 years, retiring at the age of 70.
Alton was actively involved in his community where he served as Scout Master, little league baseball coach, President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, and Sherman City Councilman from 1974-1976. He also served on the Wilson N. Jones Board of Trustees and was past President of the Grayson County Homebuilders Association. Mr. Cox was an active member of the First Baptist Church and served as deacon, director of the Chapel Sunday School Class, Tuesday Morning Men's Prayer Breakfast, and Chairman of the Building Committee. Alton was a faithful member of Sunset Dairy Queen Coffee Club and enjoyed traveling, snow skiing, and hunting.
Mr. Cox is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol Ann of Sherman; daughter, Lisa Carol Cannon and husband, Bill, of Sherman; son, Alton Craig (Sparky) Cox and wife. Rhonda, of Sherman; 3 grandchildren, Ryan Neil Campbell of Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio; Rachel Carol Campbell of Houston; and James Tyler Cox of Arlington; 3 step-grandchildren, Jason Cannon and wife, Rosa, of Arlington; Christina Cannon of Arlington; and Holly McCollum and husband, Bryan, of Sherman; great grandchild, MacKenzie Tarter of Denison; 3 step great-grandchildren, Sean Westmoreland, Seth Westmoreland, and Waylon McCollum, all of Sherman; 3 sisters, Katherine Renshaw of Bonham, Jimmie Lois Cosper of Dodd City, and Eleanor Perkins of Paris; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters, Lillian Walker, Mary Alice Clark, and Nancy Simpson.

Carol Ann Smith, Cox, 85, of Sherman, Texas went to her heavenly home in the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center.
Carol was born October 7, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas, daughter of Elvis Lloyd Smith and Annie Mae Dulaney Smith.  She attended Bonham school for one year and while in Bonham she was chosen "Miss Fannin County", was a Majorette and chosen to be Band Sweetheart.  She later transferred to San Jacinto High School in Houston, Texas where she graduated in 1953.  Carol married Alton Cox on January 2, 1954 in Durant, Oklahoma.  They were married over 61 years until his death in January 2015.  Carol was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Sherman where she was a Sunday School teacher, GA's leader, a mentor, friend and prayer warrior to many young women for 50 years.  Carol and Alton enjoyed traveling through the years, both international and domestic.  Carol's passion was reading and studying the Bible,  which lead her to working at The Book Shoppe in Sherman where she was able to share her passion for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Cannon and husband, Bill, of Sherman; 4 grandchildren, Ryan Campbell of Fort Riley, Kansas; Rachel Campbell of Carlsbad, California; James Tyler Cox and wife, Barbara, of Arlington, Texas; and Christina Cannon of Arlington, Texas; 2 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Tarter of Sherman and Avery Davis Mobbs of Sherman; 3 step-great-grandchildren, Sean Westmoreland of Hawaii; Seth Westmoreland of Sherman ; and William Cannon of Arlington.  She  has 4 cousins, Barbara Moore, Joe Moss, Margorie Taylor, and Tom Taylor.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one son, Alton Craig "Sparky" Cox.
A memorial and celebration of life was held Friday afternoon, January 15, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Sherman.  Dr. Mike Lawson officiated.  Masks were required upon entering and exiting.  Private graveside services were held at West Hill Cemetery.
