MAKERS OF AMERICA Florida Edition, c1909 vol. 2, pg. 68 "In 1820 one member of the family, who had settled in South Carolina, settled in Pickens County, Alabama, where he became permanently and prosperously established as a planter. This was Thomas H. Wier, who was one of the pioneer settlers of Alabama. The son of Thomas H. Wier, named James Stewart. a was prosperous and well known planter in the same state. He married Miss Louisa Horton. She bore him a son, Thomas Milton Wier, whose successful achievement in business is the subject of this sketch." The 1870 census shows James Stewart Wier and Louisa Horton were already separated and probably divorced by this time. The 3 older children, Thomas M. Wier, age 11; Emily, age 9; and Alice, age 8; were living with their grandmother, Nancy S. McCord Wier. Louisa and her youngest son, William Elvin, were living with her mother, Ann Horton. Neighbors were Jonathan Shirley, age 64, farmer & born South Carolina; wife Louisa Eleanor/Ellnora Louisa "Lou" Wier Shirley & their family: 1870 Carrolton, Pickens Co., Alabama census James S. Wier, age 35, living in the household of Mrs. Artemissa (Ferguson) Wier, widow of Gen. Andrew Wier, first cousin of James S.Wier's father, Thomas Hamilton Wier: Sherman Daily Register Thursday, March 21, 1901 pg. 8 J.S. WIER, AN OLD CITIZEN OF SHERMAN, DIED THIS MORNING J.S. Wier, 66, died at his home on North Throckmorton street, east Sherman, this morning shortly before 10 o'clock. He was born in Alabama in 1834. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and served through to the very last, valiantly, and the true soldier he was. He bore the scars of wounds received at Carthage, Mississippi. He had lived in Sherman for several years and leaves many friends who will deeply regret to hear of his death. His widow and 5 children have the deepest sympathy and condolence of all. Burial will take place at West Hill tomorrow and the funeral procession will leave the home immediately after services which will be held at the house by Dr. John S. Moore.
