attorney, artist, inventor and world traveler Nathaniel Bradford Birge
Jr., 710 Birge St., died at 7: 10 p. m. Monday at his home following an
extended illness. Mr. Birge, born Dec. I, 1906, was the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Bradford Birge. The senior Mr. Birge was senior
partner of Birge-Forbes Co., cotton exporters, and the principal
founder of Mrs. Tuckers Co. Inc., of Sherman, now merged with Anderson
Clayton Co.Mr. Birge was vice-president and director of the Texas Jr. Bar Assoc. in 1935 and a former member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Assoc. In 1936 he served as president of the Grayson County Bar Association. Mr., Birge continued to practice law in Sherman until entering the United States Marine Corps. Upon his discharge from the USMC in World War II he returned to Sherman to establish the Birge Mfg. Co., of which he was sole proprietor, to develop such patented inventions as' the process for making hickory briquettes for outdoor cooking and the machine for manufacture; the Slumberswitch, a device to turn off electrical appliances such as radio and TV in the room when the Person has fallen asleep; and the stationary jet engine. Mr. Birge's metal ballot boxes serve in over half the counties in Texas. Dog tags in the shape of Texas were also manufactured by the Birge Mfg. Co. for sale in many Texas cities. Mr. Birge had traveled extensively since 1929. Spain was practically a second home to him, as Spanish was a language in which he was fluent. He also traveled frequently to Mexico to oversee his responsibilities as president of the International Land and Investment Co. Sculptor and painter, Mr. Birge was a student of the renown Mexican artist, Ignacio Asunsulo at the Academia San Carlos, the art school of the University of Mexico City, Mexico. One of his artistic accomplishments was the molding of the Marine statue in dress blues used by the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Birge attended Worchester Academy, the University of Texas, the University of the South, having received his LLB degree from Cumberland University in Tennessee. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Lions Club, the American Bar Assoc., the Texas Bar Assoc., and Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity. Survivors include his wife, the former Christine Spivey of Lufkin, and a brother, Jack S. Birge, Sherman. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with burial at West Hill Cemetery, directed by DanneI and Son Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Kyle Thurman of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of Gainesville, assisted by the Rev. Allen Smith of Austin College.
