Bowles 26 September 1864 - 20 February 1914 Sherman Daily Democrat Friday, March 3, 1911 pg. 1 MRS. W.M. BOWLES DEAD Passed Away This Morning at the Family Home in East Sherman Mrs. Katie Emmett Bowles, wife of M.W. Bowles, died this morning at the family home, 719 North Maxey street, after an illness of more than ten weeks. The news has cast a shadow of gloom over the entire city for Mrs. Bowles was known and loved by the entire people of Sherman, of every class and creed. She was a pioneer of Sherman, having lived here since shortly after the civil war, when she came here with her husband and they located at the home where she died. Mrs. Bowles is survived by her husband and one son. The son is J.F. Bowles, associate editor of the Daily Democrat and correspondent for the Dallas News. The funeral services will be held at the residence Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.M. Binkley of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. J.L. Morris, pastor of Travis Street Methodist Church. Before her marriage, Mrs. Bowles was Miss Katie Emmett Seales-Patterson. She was born of Irish parentage in Woodbury, Tennessee, January 8, 1843, and was therefore past her 68th mile post on life's journey when the summons came. She was married to Marion W. Bowles in Atlanta, Georgia in June 1862. At that time Mr. Bowles was a Confederate soldier and shortly after the ceremony took up arms again in defense of his beloved southland. Since their residence in Sherman, he has followed the occupation of a contracting painter and is one of the city's most highly respected and progressive citizens. Mrs. Bowles has been a member of the Southern Methodist church for more than 50 years and has been a member of Travis Street Church in this city for 39 years. In the early days of the church organization here, she was a member of the choir and has always been active in all the work of the church. Many flowers have been sent to the residence and a number of messages of condolences have been received from friends who live elsewhere. To the grief stricken father and son the Democrat extends most sincere sympathy. Truthfully it can be said that today there is sadness in the heart of every one connected with the paper. For many years, Frank Bowles has been our co-laborer and each and every one of us have found in him a friend as true as steel. All, from the publisher to carrier boy, share with him in his great sorrow. All members of the Daughters of the Confederacy are requested to meet at the home tomorrow morning to attend the funeral.
