Prof. A.J. Kirkpatrick, Well Known Negro Teacher, Dies at His Home Here
Prof. A.J. Kirkpatric, principal of Fred Douglass colored school of Sherman, and one of the best known Negro educators of this State, died at his home, 825 North East Street, Saturday after an illness of a few weeks.  Prof. Kirkpatrick has been Principal of Fred Douglass school since 1906.
Funeral services were held from the late home Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Brown of Gainesville.  Burial was in West Hill Cemetery.
Prof. Kirkpatrick was born September 20, 1863.  He attended the public schools in Grayson County, after which he entered Prairie View State Normal, where he finished with honors.  He taught for a period of twelve years in different parts of Texas before being elected principal of Fred Douglass school here.  Under his leadership the school has been brought to a place of recognized standing among Negro High Schools of Texas.
The deceased has long held the confidence and respect of all classes of Sherman people, as a sane, conservative leader of his own people.  Among his own people he was regarded as a zealous church man and loyal fraternal man, as well as leading educator.
He was a member of the following colored fraternal organizations: Knights of Pythias, Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, U. B. F.'s Loyal Friends of America, and Taborian Lodge.
News of Prof. Kirkpatrick's death was learned with sincere regret among his white friends of Sherman, while members of the Sherman School Board regard his death as a district loss in the field of educational work among the Negro residents of Sherman.
