West Hill CemeteryFriday, December 31, 1920 pg. 8 El HENDRIX, PIONEER OF THIS COUNTY, DEAD Had Resided North of Sherman for Nearly 77 Years - Burial Saturday J.E. Hendrix, 84 years old, known to the people of Grayson County as El Hendrix, died at his home one mile south of Woodlake at 11:35 o'clock Friday morning from the infirmities of old age. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the family residence, following which interment will be in West Hill cemetery in this city. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Susan M. Hendrix, and one son and three daughters, as follows: Mrs. Onie Stephens of Denison, J.E. Hendrix, Jr., on the home place, Mrs. Mary Decker of Fresno, California, and Mrs. Burr Martin of Dallas. Mr. Hendrix came to Grayson County from Missouri in 1844 and has resided here continuously since that time, covering a period of almost 77 years. He was the first white man to build a prairie home, not only in Grayson County, but in North Texas, people at that time locating in the timbered areas on account of the Indians. His father, John Hendrix, helped to lay out the present city of Sherman and was one of the first city councilmen after incorporation. The death of this sturdy pioneer will be learned with deep regret throughout all North Texas, and his family will have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
