Jesse P. Loving, Sr., Beloved Pioneer of Sherman Is Dead
Jesse P. Loving, Sr., 84 years old, one of Sherman's oldest and best beloved citizens, died this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, following a long illness.
As is well known to the people of Sherman, "Uncle Jesse," as he was lovinly known has been confined to his home out on East Lamar street for several years, being unable to use his lower limbs, but for most of the time he has been able to sit in a rolling chair and went about the house and porch.
However, for the past two weeks he had rapidly failed, and his death was not altogether unexpected.  Nevertheless, it came as a great shock to both family and friends, and has caused a mantle of sadness to fall over the entire city.
Funeral services have not been announced.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ellen Loving, who is an invalid and has also been confined to her room for several years with a fractured hip, and the followng sons and daughters: Ed Loving, Jesse P. Loving, Jr., Dr. W.B. Loving, Sam Loving, of Sherman; Charles Loving of Amarillo, Mrs. Mattie White of Gainesville, Miss Ella Loving of Sherman, Bob Loving of New Orleans, and Knowles S. Loving of Sherman.
Mr. Loving was born in Missouri and came to Sherman with his parents when eleven years of age, hence had been a resident of this city for 73 years - truly a pioneer of Sherman and Grayson county.
He served throughout the Civil War in Alexander's Regiment, and was a member of the organization which has met annually for many years.
He served Grayson county as county treasurer for about eight consecutive terms, along in the 70s, and his administration of the affairs of that office was a credit, to himself and an honor to the county.
He also served two terms in the in the Texas Legislature, contemporaneous with Judge Tom Brown, late Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas.
Mr. Loving was a prominent Odd Fellow, and was Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge, I.O.O.F. of Texas in 1879, Deputy Grand Master in 1880, and Grand Master in 1881.
He has been a devout Christian since early in life, and was prominent in the affairs of the Houston Street Church of Christ.
In his early manhood he was an expert accountant, and kept books for several of the pioneer firms of Sherman, and took an active part in the commercial life of the city.  After retiring from the county treasurer's office, in connection with the late Geo. A. Dickerman, who was county clerk while he was county treasurer, and the late Tom Ed Bomar, his brother-in-law, he established the Sherman Herald, first as a weekly and later as a daily newspaper.
Later on he became secretary of the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Association.  In which capacity he served until declining health caused his retirement.
The passing of this good man is just the passing of another who has done a noble life's work and was ready for the Master's call to a more beautiful being.  He will be missed by all.  In all of the relations of life he was upright and honorable, liberal and just.  Given by his fellowman and loved his fellowmman, his life has been a model and an insipration, and his good works will in deed and in truth live after him.
