Horace L. Reynolds 1890 - 1941 The Denison Press Monday, August 4, 1941 pg. 1 LOY LAKE CLAIMS FOURTH VICTIM AS SHERMAN MECHANIC DROWNS SUNDAY NIGHT Unable to Swim, Remains Under Water 40 Minutes Loy Lake claimed its fourth victim Sunday night when artificial respiration applied by city firemen failed to revive Horace Reynolds, 37-year-old [sic] Sherman automobile mechanic, who drowned when the boat in which he was riding capsized about 8:30 p.m. Witnesses said the boat was a new model and had a new motor. It had been in the lake only a short time and was only 100 yards from the shore when it started speeding up, striking the barrels marking off the swimming pool from the remainder of the lake. Reynolds and his 2 companions, Tom Penn and Bowen McClure, Jr., also of Sherman, were thrown into the lake and as Reynolds couldn't swim, he went under. His companions, able to swim, kept afloat until they were rescued by other swimmers. Reynolds remained under water 30 or 40 minutes before his body was finally discovered by divers. Police, firemen and Short-Murray ambulance were called to the scene. Firemen applied artificial respiration over an hour until examinations of Dr. Doak Blassingame pronounced him dead. The body was removed to a Sherman funeral home from where funeral services were to be held. Onlookers said the boat, after striking the barrels on the east side of the pier, dove into the swimming pool, underneath the pier and onto the bank where the soft sand brought it to a halt.
