Marshall "Lee" Simmons was born in Cass County, Texas. The family moved to Grayson County where he spent most of his life. He was schooled in White Mound and Sherman schools and Austin College. He also attended the University of Texas. He was Sheriff of Grayson County from 1912-1916. He was manager of the Sherman Chamber of Commerce from 1923 - 1930. He was assigned to the Texas prison system where he made a lot of changes, including education and the rodeo. His later years were spent in Grayson County, working with his horses. Assignment Huntsville) Lee Vernon Simmons 1 January 1899 - 8 November 1928 The Whitewright Sun Thursday, November 15, 1928 pg. 1 SIMMONS FUNERAL HELD IN SHERMAN TUESDAY Funeral services for Vernon Lee Simmons [sic], who died in Los Angeles, California, were held in Sherman Tuesday afternoon at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Simmons, 512 South Crockett street. Services were conducted by Dr. T.A. Wharton, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, assisted by Dr. C.C. Brewer of the Church of Christ. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery. Several Whitewright friends of the family attended the funeral services.
