T.J. SHANNON, WELL KNOWN CITIZEN, MEETS DEATH WHILE AT WORK
Falling a distance of from 6 to 8 feet from a step ladder on which he was working on the outside of the new American Bank & Trust Company building on the east side of the square, T.J. Shannon, a well known Sherman contractor, met instant death at about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon.  Mr. Shannon fell to the concrete sidewalk in front of the building and a number of persons immediately rushed to his assistance.  To the shock and surprise of those who had seen the short fall, they found him dead.  This was also the verdict of a physician soon after his fall.
News of Mr. Shannon's sudden death, and the manner in which he met it, caused universal shock and grief throughout the city Saturday afternoon.  It came as a great surprise to those who had seen him and been talking with him but a few moments before.  Just prior to the accident, and for some time, Mr. Shannon had been operating an electrically-driven floor scraper in the new American Bank & Trust Company, on the east side of the building, in order to disconnect the wire lead to his machine from the power circuit on the outside.  Mr. Shannon's head was just above the height of the wooden awning on the adjoining building.  He is said to have had a pair of wire  nippers in his hand, and to have started cutting one of the wires when he suddenly fell.
While it is generally supposed that the receiving of the electric shock caused Mr. Shannon to lose his balance and fall, it is not known positively what caused his death.  The circuit on which he was cutting is said to have been 110 voltage, and there was no evidence that it suddenly became overloaded by crossing with a higher voltage.   There were no injuries or burns on Mr. Shannon except a scalp wound.  There were no broken bones.
Mr. Shannon was born and reared in Sherman, and was known throughout the city, as he had been engaged in the building and contracting business for several years.  He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Shannon, Sr. pioneer citizens of north of Sherman, who survive him.  He was married and besides his wife, Mrs. Leila Shannon, is survived by a seven-year-old son, Forrest, and also by two sisters, Miss Veda Shannon of Sherman and Mrs. Stella Bruce of Dallas.  Mr. Shannon was 40 years of age.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the family home at 225 North Binkley street.  Services were conducted by Rev. C.A. Spragins, pastor of Travis Street Methodist Church and Rev. George F. Cuthrell, pastor of Central Christian Church.  Burial was in West Hill Cemetery.
An upright and honorable man, and a progressive citizen, Mr. Shannon leaves a large number of friends to mourn his death.
