Nall 10 July 1870 - 4 June 1912 West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Grayson Co., Texas west side of Row #9, on edge of Street 10 The Sherman Democrat May 15, 1954 Ex-Mayor Nall Dies After Long Illness Funeral services for Dr. John Thomas Nall, 59, who resigned as mayor of Sherman just one month ago, are to be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Dannel Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. William Tate Young, rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery. Members of the Sherman Police Department will be pallbearers. Dr. Nall, veteran of military service on the Mexican border in 1913-15, of foreign service in World War I, and practicing optometrist in Sherman for 32 years, died Friday night at his home, 1502 N. Alexander. He had been in ill health several years. His condition became critical two months ago, and on April 13, he resigned the post of mayor to which he had been elected on April 7, 1953. At the time of his resignation, the City Council adopted a resolution expressing thanks for his services and admiration for the courage he had shown in carrying out his duties, though beset by illness. Dr. Nall often had said one of his greatest desires was to serve Sherman, which was his home town. A son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John Nall, Dr. Nall was born October 16, 1894, in Goodman, Mississippi. He was less than a year old when his parents came to Sherman, and with the exception of the time he spent in military service, Dr. Nall had spent most of his life here. He attended Sherman public schools, Capt. LeTellier's Academy and a Sherman business college before taking his professional education at Texas Optometric College and Philadelphia, Pa., Optometric College. He held degrees from both professional schools. Dr. Nall was a member of the National Guard company that was called into service on the Texas border in 1913, where he served until 1915. As a member of Battery E, 133rd Field Artillery, he went to France with the American Expeditionary Force in 1917. During the years after he returned, he continued his National Guard membership. When it became the Texas State Guard during World War II, he became commander of the 40th Battalion. He held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Through most of his life, Dr. Nall maintained an interest in military affairs and at one time he served as firearms instructor for the Sherman Police Department....other phases of local church and civic life. Before he was elected mayor, Dr. Nall served two years as city councilman. On December 2, 1917, Dr. Nall married Miss Effie Rousey of Sherman, who survives him. Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Peter S. Innis, the former Miss Mary Nancy Nall, of Shreveport, Louisiana; a granddaughter, and two brothers, Louis G. Nall of Los Angeles California, and Robert D. Nall of Sherman. Dr. Nall was a past president of both the Sherman Rotary Club and the Sherman Area Boy Scout Council. He had served also as chairman for the Scout court of honor. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and for many years had been active in various.....
