Visitation for the family will be Tuesday, May 17, from 6-8 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home. James was born on July 9, 1927 in Conehatta, Miss. to Tim Brown and Lela Mercer Brown. He grew up on a farm raising cows and growing cotton and vegetables. After his father died working for the railroad when he was five, his grandparents raised him. One day when he was little he planted some peas in a hurry…but he learned from the measly clumps that later grew up that he would have to plant better next time. His lesson learned, he continued to work on the farm until 1945, when he enlisted in the Army. He served at the end of World War II and in Korea, when he received the Purple Heart. He was the only survivor of 100 men in his unit at Heartbreak Ridge. Upon returning home to Mississippi he built bridges and eventually became a truck driver. He later met his wife Jennie Cooney and married her on December 23, 1978 in Arcadia Park. Surviving him are his wife, Jennie; his son Mike Stone and wife Marlys of Frisco; and his son Paul Stone and wife Waynette of McKinney. He also has five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His parents, Tim Brown and Lela Mercer Brown, and his sister Lena Rivers Smith preceded him in death. You may sign the guestbook at www.dannelfuneralhome.com.
