Hardwicke of Sherman Dies in Hospital After Illness Special to the News, Sherman, Texas Dec 24 - Clifford Gribble Hardwicke, 66, purchasing agent for the Hardwicke-Etter Company and son of one of the co-founders of the firm, died Monday in a Sherman hospital after a long illness. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Etter Hardwicke. His father was one of the cofounders and the first president of the Hardwicke-Etter Company, manufacturers of cotton gins. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery. Hardwicke was born June 16, 1885, in Sherman. He received his education in Sherman private schools and Virginia Military Institute, where he took a degree in electrical engineering. He worked for the New York Central Railroad in New York City for several years, and returned to Sherman in 1911 to join his father in the mill supply business with Hardwicke-Etter Company. Hardwicke was a director of the Frisco Lines of Texas, and the Jamestown Society of Virginia. He was one of the organizers of the Woodlawn Country Club. He was married to Miss Rita Love Case of Sherman. Their son, Clifford Hardwicke, Jr., a first lieutenant in the cavalry, was killed Jan. 17, 1942 in Bataan. He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Miss Mildred Hardwicke of Sherman and Mrs. Lewis J. Sherill of New York City, and one brother, Robert D. Hardwicke of Fort Worth. Hardwicke is the second member of the firm to die in recent months; Joe F. Etter, one of the organizers of the company and chairman of the board, died three months ago.
