West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas Joseph Edward Armstrong 1894 - 1941 The Sherman Democrat January 27, 1941 pg.10 DROPS DEAD AT CAFE HERE Funeral Services Tuesday for Joe Armstrong Joe E. Armstrong, 52, operator of a service station at 1703 East Lamar, died suddenly Monday at 10 a.m. at the Morris cafe, 611 East Lamar, where he had gone for a cup of coffee. He resided at 103 North Carr. Attendants at the cafe said that Mr. Armstrong complained of indigestion and drank 2 cups of coffee. He got up to leave and dropped to the floor. He was pronounced dead when an attending physician arrived, death being attributed to heart trouble with which he had been bothered for 2 years. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Key Memorial Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. C.W. Thomas, pastor, assisted by Rev. E.L. Silliman, retired Methodist minister. Interment will be in West Hill Cemetery, directed by Talley. The body is to remain at the residence until time for services. Mr. Armstrong was born November 12, 1888 [sic] at Edinburgh, Scotland, He was a World War veteran who served 16 years in the United States Navy. He came to Sherman 13 years ago from Madison, Indiana, and had resided here since. He was a carpenter at the Hardwicke-Etter company before he began operation of the service station 3 years ago. He was married 12 years ago to Miss Billie Simmons, who survives. Others survivors are a son, Joe Edward, Jr. of Sherman; and a daughter, Audrey Irene Armstrong of Indiana.

ARMSTRONG Funeral services have been set for Sunday afternoon in Key Memorial Methodist Church for P.O. 1-C Joseph Edward Armstrong, Jr., 33, of Oak Harbor, Washington, a native of Sherman, who died at sea January 21 aboard USS Midway, after a heart attack. Rev, James Koontz, minister of the church and Rev. R.M. Williams, pastor of the East Sherman Baptist Church, conducted the services. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery, directed by Barrett-Morris Funeral Home. Pallbearers were from the Navy Air Station, Dallas. Military rites were accorded at graveside. After graduation from Sherman High school; he enlisted in the Navy, August 10, 1948. He was stationed at Ault Air Base Washington and was on special duty for the U.S.A. Air Force in the intelligence division at the time of his death. He was born June 12, 1930 in Sherman, son of Mrs. Billy Simmons Johnson of Sherman and the late Joseph E. Armstrong, Sr. On May 15, 1954, he married Miss Opal Dell Hill in Sherman. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife; his mother; and 2 sons, Mark Edward and William Blair Armstrong, all of Sherman. J.E. ARMSTRONG DIES ABOARD USS MIDWAY Joseph Edward Armstrong, Jr., 33, son of Mrs. W.M. Johnson, 103 N. Carr St., Sherman, died at sea Tuesday after suffering a heart attack. Armstrong was with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Midway. The body will be returned to Sherman for burial. Survivors in addition to his mother are his wife, the former Miss Opal Dell Hill of Oak Harbor, Washington; and 2 sons, Mark and Blair Armstrong.
