Sherman Daily Democrat February 17, 1937 pg 1 Stroke of Paralysis Fatal to Former county Superintendent George W. Acton, 74, former Grayson county public school superintendent, died suddenly Wednesday at noon at the family home, 1304 East Houston, following a stroke of paralysis. He had been in failing health for more than a year, though his death was not expected. Funeral services will be handled by Dannel-Scott Funeral home. Surviving Mr. Acton are his wife and two sons and a daughter, including Sam Acton of Wichita Falls, Dr. George Parrish Acton, Muskogee, Okla., and Mrs. A.L. Dennis of Sherman, and several grandchildren. Mr. Acton was born Feb. 18, 1863, at Boonville, Mo., son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Acton. He came to Texas in 1893. He attended the public schools in Missouri and the University of Missouri and for several years was a school teacher. He served for 12 years as Grayson county superintendent of schools. He was a Mason, an Odd Fellow and a member of the Woodmen of the World and of St. Stephen's Episcopal church. Sherman Daily Democrat February 18, 1937 Funeral services for George W. Acton were held at 4 p.m. Thursday from St. Stephens Episcopal church, conducted by the rector, the Rev. George H. Bennett, assisted by Dr. Roy H. Biser, pastor of the Central Christian church. Interment was in West Hill cemetery. Mr. Acton, who for 12 years was Grayson county school superintendent, died unexpectedly Wednesday. Sherman Democrat August 17, 1948 Mrs. Mary Acton Mrs. Mary Parrish Acton, widow of George W. Acton, former superintendent of county schools, died at a local hospital Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. She had made her home at 1304 East Houston. Funeral services will be held at the Dannel Funeral Home Thursday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Robert Badgett, pastor of the Central Christian Church, will conduct. Pallbearers will be Sgt. W.W. Williams, Dr. W.R. Younger and Frank Bass, all of Whitesboro, W.F. Dennis, Elbert Dennis and D.F. Cannon, all of Sherman. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Acton was born at Old Palestine, Mo., the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Josephine George Parrish. She was married at Old Palestine to Professor Acton in 1886. They came to Texas in 1893 and settled at Sherman i 1918. Survivors include: one son, Samuel Action, Wichita Falls; one daughter, Mrs. A.L. Dennis, Sherman; two grandchildren, George B. Acton, Sherman and Mrs. R.B. Ross, Wichita Falls; and four great-grandchildren, Patrick Allen Acton of Sherman and Betsy Sue and Bill Ross of Wichita Falls.
