Sherman, Tex., April 16 - J. P. Mills, a member of the
Sherman Bar, died at his residence a few miles west of this
city this afternoon, and will be buried to-morrow at 11:30
o'clock in the West Side Cemetery. He was held in high
esteem by all his brethren. He made a model husband and
father and an exemplary citizen. District Court adjourned
out of respect, and at a meeting of the bar, presided over
by Capt. J. D. Woods, resolutions of respect were passed and
several complimentary speeches made.

J. Rowan Mills Died Sunday in Houston
Had Spent Most of His Life in Sherman Before Going There
Was Active Vice President Federal Farm Land Bank
Body Brought Sherman; Funeral Was Held Monday Afternoon
J.
Rowan Mills, 52, active vice president of the Federal Farm Land Bank at
Houston, and former well known Sherman business man, died at 7:30
o'clock Sunday morning at a hospital in that city following a two
weeks' illness and surgical operation.
Funeral services were held
here Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the St. Stephen's Episcopal
church, conducted by the Rev. Walter Loflin, rector of the
church. Burial was in West Hill cemetery.
Active pall bearers were Allen Birge, W.L. Ely, Jim Everheart, R.L. Heflin, George Conley, Henry Bone and Charles Batsell.
The
body arrived in Denison Monday morning at 11:45 o'clock on a Missouri,
Kansas & Texas passenger train from Houston, and was brought
overland in a Stewart M. Scott Funeral coach here to the church.
He
is survived by his wife, who was Miss Mary Moody of this city before
her marriage, and one brother and four sisters. These are
Lawrence Mills of Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Frank Batsell of Sherman, Mrs.
E.M. Gillispie of Arizona, Mrs. W.B. Stowers of Oklahoma City and Mrs.
O.O. Touchstone of Dallas.
Mr. Mills was born in New Orleans, La.,
June 24, 1875, and during his infancy moved to Grayson county, locating
on a farm four miles southwest of the city. His parents, the late Mr.
and Mrs. John P. Mills, were among the prominent early settlers of this
county. He was one of the largest land owners and farmers in this
section until he retired a number of years ago and moved to Sherman to
engage in the real estate and insurance business. He lived here
until two years ago, when he went to Houston to accept the place in the
land bank.
While living in the city, Mr. Mills took an active part
in a number of civic organizations and was connected with several
business institutions.
At the time of his death, he was a director
of the Merchants and Planters National Bank, and was a member of the
firm of Copley & Mills Real Estate and Insurance Company. He
was former president of the Sherman Democrat, the Grayson Building
& Loan Association, and the Red River Valley Fair. He was
active president of the Sherman Chamber of commerce for one year.
He was also secretary and treasurer of the Federal Farm Loan
Association before he left Sherman. He was a member of the Rotary
Club and for a number of years had been a member of the St. Stephen's
Episcopal church.
Among the out of town relatives and friends who
were here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Stowers of
Oklahoma City, Mr. and Mrs. O.O. Touchstone of Dallas, Lawrence Mills
of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Judge M.H. Gossett, president of the Federal Farm Land
Bank at Houston, Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Carter, Hoxie Thompson, Douglas
Johnson, A.L. Vandemark and Rev. Joseph B. Dobbins, of Houston,
Rev. Dobbins was former pastor of the St. Stephen's Episcopal church
here, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Moody of Waco were also here.

MRS. ELLA WILSON MILLS
Died Yesterday Afternoon at Her Home in South Crockett Street
Mrs.
Ella Wilson Mills, aged 57 years, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana,
and for more than 35 years a resident of Sherman, died shortly after
4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home in South Crockett street
after a critical illness of only a few days. While she had been
an invalid for more than 13 years, her condition had not become
alarming until a few days ago. She was a member of one of the
most prominent families of Grayson county and was the wife of J.P.
Mills, deceased, at one time a well known attorney of Grayson county.
She
is survived by 6 children, as follows: Mrs. Frank Batsell of
Sherman; Mrs. Allen Gillispie of Silver City, New Mexico; Misses Mary
and Ellie Mills of Sherman; Rowan Mills of Sherman; and Lawrence Mills
of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by a brother and sister,
Turner Wilson and Mrs. H.O. Head of this city.
The
decedent had been a member of the Christian church since childhood and
was one of the devout and active members of the Central congregation in
this city.
The
funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning by Elder J. Lem
Keevil, minister of fhe Central Christian Church and interment will
take place at West Hill Cemetery.
