 West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas Dallas Morning News 7 September 1897 An Unknown Infant Buried Sherman, Tex., Sept. 6 - An infant, three weeks old, or about that, whose parents or guardians were about to pay Mattie Johnson, a colored woman who lives at 987 North Throckmorton street $5 per week to care for it, but whose place of residence or whereabouts are to Mattie Johnson unknown, was buried in the charity plat at West Hill cemetery today. One week ago last Friday night a man left the child in the care of the colored woman, stating that its mother was very ill and it had to be carried away from home. He agreed to pay $5 per week for its keeping, and paid $5 in advance. He came back last Friday and paid $5 more, but said she would get the next remittance through the mail, as he traveled a great deal. She laid the matter before the undertaker, and relying upon the request of the man that she go ahead even in case of death and he would meet the expenses incurred, she had the child interred as above stated instead of at the expense of the county.
