Heart Disease Ends Career of Editor, Teacher and Prohibitionist

A career as an insurance agent, prohibitionist, farmer, teacher and editor was ended for Erwin Jefferson Roberts Monday at 7:55 p.m. when he succumbed to a disease of the heart at the family home, 1107 North Hopson.  He had been in failing health for the past five years and seriously ill for almost a year.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the home, conducted by Dr. Conway T. Wharton, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of which Mr. Roberts had long been a member.  Interment will be in West Hill cemetery, with arrangements directed by the Dannel-Scott funeral home.  Pallbearers will include L.A. Rodden, George Hamilton, J.F. Holt, A.Y. Creager, Tom E. Hopson, W.G. Richardson, Joe Parrish of Tom Bean, Richard R. Lee of Dallas and Judge Ben L. Jones of Dallas.
Surviving Mr. Roberts are his wife, Mrs. Mary Melton Roberts, to whom he was married Sept. 14, 1910; an adopted son, who is also his nephew, E.J. Roberts Jr; a sister, Mrs. J.A. Abernathy, Dallas, and three brothers, Barlow Roberts of Sherman, Palo A. Roberts of Auston and Randolph Roberts of Dallas.  He also is survived by five nieces, including Mrs. C.C. Curtis of Fort Worth, Mrs. John La Curto of New York City, Mrs. Caddell Scruggs of Houston, Miss Ruth Abernathy of Dallas and Mrs. Frank Vaden III of Los Angeles, Calif.
Mr. Roberts was born in Celina, Tenn., Dec. 18, 1861, the son of Joe B. Roberts and Mrs. Florentha L. Roberts, with whom he came to Grayson county in 1867.  His father was a Confederate soldier in the war between the states, serving under Gen. John Morgan.
A general agent for the Southwestern Life Insurance company, Mr. Roberts had maintained offices in Sherman for more than 25 years.  He considered the insurance field his real life work, adding much work in the interest of prohibition.  He was never an office seeker but was always active for his favorite candidates.
Mr. Roberts served in the state land office at Austin under three administrations, was clerk in several legislatures and was sergeant-at-arms in the Texas senate one term.  During President Cleveland's administration he served as U.S. commissioner from 1892 to 1895, with headquarters at Perry, Okla., and was the first chairman of the democratic executive committee of Noble county, Okla.
Mr. Roberts owned and published the Sherman Courier for four years about 35 years ago, his paper serving as the prohibition organ of the county.  He was also editor and publisher of the Whitewright Sun for several years.
In September 1910 Mr. Roberts married Miss Mary Melton, who came to Texas when a young girl from Mississippi, her native state.  She was graduated from the old Mary Nash college in Sherman and taught for 16 years in the.....
