Friday, January 5, 1917 pg. 5 Lee Skaggs Dead J.L. "Lee" Skaggs, a well known business man of Sherman died at his home Sunday, on East Mulberry street, after a long illness. Mr. Skaggs had been in ill health for the past 2 years or more, and had tried almost every available means, in an attempt to regain his health. Funeral services were held at the family residence at 10:30 o'clock Sunday morning, followed by interment in West Hill cemetery. Dr. Fred F. Brown, pastor of the First Baptist church of that city, conducted the services. The pall bearers were Burt Akers, Walter Akers, R.L. McGinnis, Charley Savage, Joe F. Etter, and Tucker George. Mr. Skaggs was born and reared in the Kentuckytown community, but moved to Sherman where he was engaged in business for several years before his health failed him. He had many friends in this section who will regret to learn of his death. Mr. Skaggs is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Skaggs, and 2 children, Thelma and Howard. He is also survived by 2 brothers and 4 sisters, John and Charles Skaggs of the Kentuckytown community; Mrs. Frankie Cowart and Miss Sallie Skaggs of Ken tuckytown, and Mrs. J.K. Johnson of Oklahoma; and Mrs. Alice Vestal of Myra. The Whitewright Sun Thursday, May 5, 1955 pg. 1 Sherman - A lengthy illness was fatal to Mrs. Kate Skaggs, 82, who lived with her daughter, Mrs. W.L. Roberts, at 914 S. Montgomery. A native of Grayson County, Mrs. Skaggs was born at Bells. She was married to James Lee Skaggs at Whitewright about 1898. He died in 1916. Survivors besides the one daughter include one son, Lt. Col. Howard J. Skaggs, San Francisco, California; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery.
